Moiraine and Lan are reunited and taking comfort in each other's arms (We are back to seeing things from Moiraine's POV).
Moiraine's POV
When Moiraine awoke, she realized she was wrapped in someone's arms, and it felt good. The next thing she noticed was a muscular chest under her hands and Lan's smell surrounding her. Carefully, her fingers moved over the chest finding countless scars – scars she knew very well. She had been there when the man had received some of them.
Smiling, the Aes Sedai snuggled closer. Soon, they would have to continue their journey, but for now, she just wanted to enjoy Lan's presence. They rarely had a moment to themselves.
A wave of love rolled over her, and the Malkieri tightened his grip on her. At the same time, he buried his nose in her locks. Moiraine loved it whenever he did that.
And then her fingers moved over a new scar located on his belly. Confused, she froze. What had happened? Who was responsible for that scar? And why didn't she know about it?
"I'm all right."
Lan's voice was muffled by Moiraine's hair, yet she heard every word. "All right?" Why couldn't she remember where he got that injury? Shouldn't she know about it? After all, they have been traveling together for years now.
"Your sisters healed me."
Her... sisters? The Cairhien woman lifted her head. Shocked, she realized they weren't in a tavern. It was a tent of the Yellow Ajah! And then her memories returned. The village boy, falling off the tree. Tear. Lan's heavy injury. The Healer, telling her Lan would die. Siuan, finding a solution to get the Malkieri to the camp. The wagon, arriving at the camp, and Lan, who...
Panic grabbed Moiraine's heart, squeezing it until she could barely breathe. Suddenly, she remembered very well the moment when her bond with Lan had turned silent – the moment Lan had left her.
"I'm here." Her Warder felt her panic and tightened his grip on her. "I'm here."
But Moiraine needed to see the scar with her own eyes. Was he truly saved? Had her sisters healed Lan? Was it all over now?
In panic, the Aes Sedai freed herself from her Warder's embrace, letting her hands roam over his belly. The injury was gone. Lan's skin looked healthy again. Only a new scar stayed as a reminder of what had happened.
Tears built up in Moiraine's eyes when she reminded herself that it had been her fault. Lan had been injured because she had used Saidar.
"Moiraine." Gently, the uncrowned king of Malkier reached out and cupped her cheek with his hand. He was obviously reacting to Moiraine's feelings. "What's wrong? I'm healed."
"You nearly died." Her voice was barely audible, even to her own ears. "Light, Lan! For a moment, you did die! The bond was silent!"
"But I was saved."
How could that man stay so calm?! Why wasn't he upset? Or shocked? Or...?
"Moiraine." Lan pulled her hand away from his belly up to his chest and placed it over his beating heart. His other hand pulled her head to him until their foreheads connected. "Moiraine." His voice was so damn soft, freeing the first tears to roll over her cheek. "I'm alive."
"But you were gone! If Kerene hadn't used the One Power... or worse! What if we still would have been in that tavern?! You made me promise not to use Saidar to heal you! I couldn't have helped you because of that damn promise!"
