"So, (Y/n)." Runaan's eyes trace me. Their steel blue colour are like the skies that I have gazed upon for so long. Perhaps there was always a part of me that looked up as a teenager in order to find what I didn't know I was missing. "Are you going to introduce me to your husband?" Runaan finishes his question.
"I still can't get over that," Rayla adds in before I can speak. She shakes her head, the statement a sort of disbelieving scoff.
"What?" I taunt her. My head tilts sideways, looking from Soren - my freaking husband - to the others. A small smile reflects on the former's face. Our companions do not fully reflect it.
"You got married," Rayla emphasises. "In the span of like two weeks and I wasn't invited!?" Her volume rises and I see for the first time a genuine hurt in her eyes.
"It was a spur of the moment," I say. The words are an attempt for reassurance; we didn't intentionally do it behind their backs. "But because I know it will make you happy, we can do a nicer ceremony later," I promise her. "Now," I turn to Runaan, ready to offer the rundown. "This is Soren, my best friend for over a decade now and then some twists and turns of romance-" Runaan's brows raise. I don't need to give him the details. "After the destruction I proposed," I say with a grin.
Finally, that needed light enters his gaze. "That's my girl," Runaan chuckles, pride filling his features. "But this..." his words trial off as he lifts a hand to gesture about Soren's body. "Human?"
Soren clears his throat, shifting forward from where he sits. "If I can voice for myself I would say that I'm quite a respectable human being and I love your daughter very much, Sir," he rattles off.
Runaan nods slightly as if trying to be content with the information. Then he looks at Callum. "I- uh- I love your other daughter, very much, too," Callum stutters. "Sir," he promptly adds with a weird sort of bow. Rayla and I share a humoured look.
"Both of you girls," Runaan deduces with a shake of his head and a chuff. I release a breath. This won't turn awkward and smug. "You're just like your mother, (Y/n)," he goes on to state. "Ethari always said you looked like your dad but I believe your soul derives directly from Eve." Runaan shakes his head as if trying to rid the memory of my mother. "And I should have known Rayla would always follow in your steps," he deduces, looking between us.
I smile at that comment. "So now what?" I question after allowing a few more seconds to pass between us all. "Now we follow the current?" I wonder happily. The idea of floating down the river - as carefree as the water itself - is a beautiful one.
"Now we take a nap," Rayla says pointedly. "Skies, I am tired."
To go alongside her sentence, Rayla's mouth opens in a large yawn.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sky is dark. Only shadowed grey clouds move up above, covering any stars that try to peak down. The people around me are asleep but my eyes are wide.
The water calls me.
Not the consistant pull of the stream, but just the little part right over the side. My movements are stealthy as I lean around Runaan's body. My hands plant firmly against the wooden edge in order to peer over.
Even the water is black as night.
Within the water there lies a reflection. I recognise the hair, but the face is not my own. It is my dad. Whilst I'm ready to peacefully admire his image, the facade reaches out of the river and grasps a hold of my breastplate. The resulting splash is a temporary sound followed by a whirring empty hum in my ears. It's cold and wet but that's not my main problem in the water.
