In denial, in perplexity. She didn't know
how to deal with these strange feelings
and emotions budding within her as she
spent time with her six male friends.
Growing up surrounded by men her
entire life, she...

Izana was halfway down the aisle of instant noodles when he spaced out. His mind wandered too easily lately.
Thud.
A pink ball bounced against his shoes. He snapped out of the haze, and looked down just as a little girl skidded to a stop. Before he could say a word, tears welled up, and her mouth stretched open in an ear-splitting wail.
"Huh?! What?!" Izana panicked, bending down and grabbing the ball. "Here, kid! Your ball-what are you crying for?!"
He stiffly held it out, but the girl didn't take it. She just wailed louder, flailing her tiny fists.
"Okay-okay! This is not my fault!" He scooped her up. "Why are you crying? What did I do?!"
"You look like a villain, duh."
Izana jerked his head up to see you standing there, barely holding back a smirk.
"I am NOT," he growled, turning so you couldn't see the blush creeping up his ears. "She just started bawling. I didn't do anything. One second, I picked up her ball, and she went banshee mode."
You took the child from his awkward hold, her cries instantly softening when she nestled against your shoulder. You patted her back and asked, "Where's your mommy, sweetheart?"
The girl sniffled. "I chased my ball... Mommy was behind me... then I dunno..."
"Don't worry. Let's ask the nice staff here, yeah?"
You headed toward the counter, and Izana trailed after you. The convenience store clerk took the girl and made a call to the nearby police box.
When you stood up and turned around after reassuring the kid, Izana was scratching the back of his neck. "I wasn't trying to scare her or anything..."
You raised an eyebrow, trying not to laugh. "It's okay, Mr. Villain. I saw you try to comfort her."
"She screamed harder when I picked her up."
"She's a toddler. Definitely good at sensing stranger danger."
"Tch."
You walked up beside him, nudging his arm playfully. "But you didn't hesitate to help. That was sweet."
Izana looked away, mumbling, "Yeah, well... she reminded me of Emma when she was that size, always running around and doing dumb stuff. Had to save her a lot."
"You're good with kids. Always have been."
"I'm not," he grumbled, embarrassed. "I just... don't like seeing them cry, that's all."
Izana suddenly narrowed his eyes. "Wait a damn second. What the hell are you doing here?"
"Buying snacks?"
"Bullshit," he scoffed. "You literally waved goodbye to me twenty minutes ago saying you were going home. Are you stalking me?!"
"I mean.. yeah. I guess. I was following you," you admitted. You reached out and took his hand. Izana stared down at the connection.
