Saturday mornings were quieter than Amanda remembered.

The city still woke early, but weekends carried a softer rhythm. The traffic wasn't as impatient. The sidewalks weren't as crowded. Even the sunlight seemed gentler as it spilled through the dining room window.

Amanda sat at the table with a bowl of cereal she had barely touched.

Her phone rested beside it.

No new messages.

She unlocked it anyway.

Nothing.

With a small sigh, she locked the screen again.

Her dad glanced at her from the kitchen while preparing breakfast.

"You're awfully quiet today."

Amanda looked up and smiled faintly.

"Am I?"

"You've checked your phone four times in the last five minutes."

"I have not."

"You have."

She laughed softly.

"...Maybe."

Her dad set a plate of toasted pandesal on the table before taking the seat across from her.

"Everything okay?"

Amanda nodded.

"Yeah."

He studied her for a moment.

"You miss the States?"

Amanda thought about it.

"...Sometimes."

"And sometimes?"

She looked out the window.

"Sometimes I miss people."

Her dad understood immediately.

He didn't ask who.

He simply reached for his coffee.

"You'll see your old friends eventually."

Amanda smiled politely.

"Maybe."

The conversation drifted to lighter topics after that, but her thoughts never really left.

They always found their way back to one person.

Khae.

It had been almost a week since they'd talked.

Not a long conversation.

Just enough to catch up after years apart.

Just enough to realize how much time had changed them both.

And yet, even after all that time, Amanda still remembered the way Khae had looked at her back then.

Like she was something sacred.

Like she was the one person who had reached her when no one else could.

Khae had once told her, with a voice so soft Amanda almost missed it, that she had been an angel.

Not in the way people said things to be polite.

Not in the way people used words they didn't mean.

Khae had meant it.

Amanda had saved her from a miserable, unhappy life.

She had found a friend in her when everything else felt empty.
