Monday somehow felt longer than it actually was.
By Tuesday morning, the university had fully settled back into its familiar rhythm.
Students hurried across campus with unfinished readings tucked under their arms. The line at the coffee kiosk stretched almost to the walkway, and every other conversation seemed to begin with the words, "Have you finished the assignment?"
The girls' group chat had been buzzing since seven.
Christine: Who's awake?
Yves: Unfortunately.
Christine: Good morning to you too.
Nica: I have a quiz in thirty minutes. Pray for me.
Francheska: You'll do fine.
Lindtsey: Who has the USB from yesterday?
Gwen: Christine.
Christine: ...Oh.
Yves: How do you "oh" a USB?
Christine: I forgot it was in my bag.
Yves: Shocking.
Christine: Don't bully me before breakfast.
Aiah smiled at her phone as she walked toward the Fine Arts Building.
Her phone vibrated again.
A private message.
Khae: Good morning.
Aiah's smile grew.
Aiah: Good morning.
Three dots appeared almost immediately.
Khae: Did you eat?
She laughed softly.
It was such a Khae question.
Aiah: Yes.
A few seconds later...
Khae: Truthfully?
Aiah looked up at the sky.
Then typed back.
Aiah: ...Half a sandwich.
Her phone rang.
She answered before the second ring.
"Hi."
"I knew it."
Aiah laughed.
"I ate."
"You ate half."
"That's still eating."
There was a tiny sigh on the other end.
"I'll buy you lunch later."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
"I want to."
Aiah bit back a smile.
"...Okay."
"I have class."
"So do I."
"See you later?"
"Always."
