The arrangement had been settled the night before.
After dinner, Marcus had stood in the garage with a key in each hand while Khae leaned against her new car, watching Aiah with an amused smile.
Marcus lifted the key to the red car.
Khae lifted the key to the new one.
"So," Marcus said, "which one?"
Aiah blinked.
"Which one... what?"
"The one you'll be driving for the next two weeks," Marcus answered as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.
Khae smiled. "Your choice."
Aiah looked from one car to the other.
The new one was beautiful.
It still carried the unmistakable feeling of being brand new, from the flawless paint to the untouched interior.
But her eyes lingered on the red car.
She smiled before she even realized it.
"The red one."
Marcus looked at Khae knowingly.
"I had a feeling."
"So did I," Khae admitted.
Aiah laughed softly.
"Why is everyone saying that?"
Khae slipped the new car key into her pocket.
"Because I know you."
Aiah narrowed her eyes playfully.
"That's a dangerous sentence."
"It usually is."
Marcus chuckled.
"Any reason?"
Aiah looked back at the red car.
"I think..."
She searched for the right words.
"...I'd feel more comfortable with this one."
She rested her hand lightly on the roof.
"It already feels familiar."
Marcus nodded once.
"Then the red one it is."
And just like that, the decision was made.
The next morning, Aiah woke before her alarm.
Five o'clock.
She stared at the ceiling for a second, surprised she hadn't needed the alarm at all.
Usually, she would have negotiated for another five minutes.
Today, she simply got up.
The house was still quiet.
She showered, got dressed for work, tied her hair neatly, and packed everything she needed before heading downstairs.
By the time she reached the kitchen, Ivy was already making breakfast.
She looked up from the stove.
"You're early."
"So are you."
"I have to get to work."
Aiah smiled.
