Mezzo was quiet before opening.

That was the part of the café most customers never saw.

No laughter from the corner tables.

No students arguing over assignments.

No friends staying longer than they planned because "one more drink" somehow became another hour.

Just the soft hum of the lights, the scent of freshly ground coffee, and the sound of chairs being placed back onto the floor.

On most Sundays, Lindtsey would still be asleep at this hour.

It was one of the few days she allowed herself to rest.

No university lectures.

No projects.

No deadlines.

No reason to hurry.

Which was why she was surprised when her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Mezzo.

She answered immediately.

"Good morning."

"Miss Lindtsey, sorry to call this early."

"It's okay. What happened?"

The supervisor hesitated.

"Two of the crew won't be able to come in today. One is sick, and the other had an emergency."

Lindtsey sat up on her bed.

"Oh."

"We can manage, but it would help if someone could come in for a few hours."

She glanced outside her window.

Sunday.

A free day.

"I'll come."

The supervisor sighed softly.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"You should rest. Or spend time with your friends."

Lindtsey smiled.

"I can still do that."

"You always say that."

"Because it's true."

The supervisor laughed.

"You sound like your grandfather."

Lindtsey smiled at that.

"Don't tell him."

"He'll be proud."

"I'll be there soon."

Mezzo was not Lindtsey's regular workplace.

Not exactly.

The café was only three years old.

Her grandfather had opened it around the time she entered university, and because of its location near their school, it quickly became one of their favorite places.

Her friends studied there.

They ate there.

They celebrated small victories there.

They complained about exams there.

Sometimes they tried new cafés just for variety, but they always came back.
