By the time Mezzo closed, the streets outside were quieter.
Angela locked the front door while Fea switched off the lights near the dining area.
Khae finished wiping the espresso machine before removing her apron.
She stretched her shoulders.
"I think my feet are filing a complaint."
Fea laughed.
"They've been complaining since lunch."
"They have a valid reason."
Angela walked past them carrying a small trash bag.
"You two complain every closing shift."
"And yet," Fea replied, "we still show up the next day."
"Unfortunately."
"Very unfortunately."
Khae smiled as she hung her apron in its usual place.
"See you both tomorrow."
"Drive safely," Angela said.
"You both take care"
Fea waved as she headed toward the waiting shed outside.
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Aiah was already waiting in the car across the street.
She had insisted on staying until Khae finished.
The moment Khae climbed into the driver's seat, she let out a long sigh.
"You waited."
Aiah smiled.
"I said I would."
"You could've gone home first."
"I could have."
"But I didn't want to."
Khae looked at her for a second before smiling.
"I missed you."
"You saw me an hour ago."
"I know but I still missed you."
Aiah laughed softly.
They pulled away from the curb.
For a few minutes, neither of them spoke.
The silence wasn't awkward.
It never was.
It was simply the comfortable kind that came after a long day.
"I'm tired." said Khae.
"I can tell."
"Was it obvious?"
"You yawned three times before fastening your seatbelt."
"...I did?"
"You did."
Khae smiled sheepishly.
"I didn't even notice."
"You also forgot your water bottle."
Khae immediately looked down.
"...Oh."
Aiah reached into the cup holder beside her.
"I already put it here."
