The afternoon rush at Mezzo was in full swing.
The espresso machine hissed.
Orders filled the counter.
Customers moved in and out of the café, escaping the summer heat outside.
Behind the bar, everyone had settled into a rhythm.
Fea handled the register with quiet confidence, guiding customers through their choices whenever they needed recommendations.
Angela moved between the kitchen and the counter, keeping track of pastries and supplies.
Lindtsey checked the display case while Khae prepared drinks beside her.
"Khae."
Khae looked up.
"Can you help with this order?"
"Sure."
She stepped over immediately, checking the details before starting the next drink.
She had just finished placing the cup on the counter when the bell above the door chimed.
At first, nobody paid much attention.
The café was busy.
Then Khae looked up.
And stopped.
"Dad?"
The word came out before she could think.
Marcus stood near the entrance, holding two pizza boxes in his hands.
For a second, Khae simply stared at him.
Her father smiled.
"Surprised?"
"A little."
"A little?"
Khae glanced at the pizza boxes.
"You came here."
Marcus looked around the café.
"I wanted to see where you've been spending your summer."
The corners of Khae's lips lifted.
When she first told him she accepted a summer job at Mezzo, he honestly thought she was just excited about the idea and would change her mind after a few days.
Now he was standing there, seeing her behind the counter.
Actually working.
Actually staying.
"I thought you were joking when you told me."
Khae raised an eyebrow.
"You thought I would quit?"
"I wondered."
She gave him a look.
Marcus laughed.
"Okay. Maybe."
Lindtsey noticed him a moment later.
Her face immediately brightened.
"Tito Marcus?"
She walked over, genuinely surprised.
"Lindtsey..."
"What are you doing here?"
Marcus smiled.
"I brought food."
