The following morning started the same way most of Aiah's mornings had for the past week.
Early.
Purposeful.
And just a little happier than before.
By six o'clock, she and Gwen were already in the car, making their way toward Khae's house.
The city was only beginning to wake up, the roads still forgiving enough that Aiah could enjoy driving instead of worrying about traffic.
Gwen glanced over from the back seat.
"You know..."
"Hm?"
"You don't look sleepy anymore."
"I had coffee."
"No."
Gwen smiled.
"You have motivation."
Aiah laughed.
"I do not."
"You do."
"I just like leaving on time."
"Mhm."
"I do."
"Mhm."
Aiah shook her head.
"You've been spending too much time with Christine."
"That's possible."
A few minutes later, they stopped outside Khae's house.
The small gate opened.
Khae stepped out carrying a medium-sized brown paper bag in her good hand, her backpack hanging from her shoulder.
She smiled the moment she saw the familiar red car.
"Good morning."
"Morning," Aiah greeted.
Gwen leaned forward between the seats.
"Hi, Khae."
"Morning, Gwen."
After settling into the passenger seat, Khae placed the paper bag carefully on her lap.
Aiah glanced at it.
"What's that?"
"My breakfast."
"You skipped breakfast?"
Khae made a small face.
"I woke up a little later than I planned."
Before Aiah could say anything else, Khae opened the bag.
Inside were three neatly wrapped sandwiches.
Each one had a small handwritten label.
Aiah
Gwen
Khae
Gwen immediately leaned closer.
"...Ate Janice packed one for us too?"
Khae nodded with a smile.
"She said no one should leave the house hungry."
Gwen's face softened immediately.
"I love Ate Janice."
Khae laughed.
"She'll be very happy to hear that."
