Morning arrived quietly.
Soft sunlight slipped through the curtains, painting pale strips of gold across Aiah's bedroom floor.
The house was still.
Somewhere downstairs, faint sounds drifted up from the kitchen—cabinet doors opening, a kettle beginning to whistle, someone moving around unhurriedly.
Aiah blinked awake.
For a few seconds, she simply stared at the ceiling.
Then she remembered.
Antipolo.
The traffic.
Khae staying over.
Slowly, she turned her head.
Khae was still asleep beside her.
Or at least...
She looked asleep.
One arm rested beneath her pillow, her breathing slow and even. The pillows they had carefully placed between them the night before had shifted while they slept. One leaned crookedly between them now, no longer much of a barrier.
Aiah smiled to herself.
"...Good morning," she whispered.
No response.
She watched Khae for another moment.
A loose strand of hair had fallen over Khae's forehead.
Without thinking, Aiah reached over and gently tucked it behind her ear.
Still nothing.
"You really are asleep," she murmured.
She glanced toward the bedroom door.
Still closed.
The house remained quiet.
Her gaze returned to Khae.
"...Just one."
Carefully leaning over the pillow, Aiah pressed the gentlest kiss against Khae's cheek.
She had barely started pulling away when...
"...That's all I get?"
Aiah froze.
Khae opened one eye, the corner of her mouth already lifting.
"You were awake?"
"The whole time."
"Oh my gosh."
Aiah immediately hid her face behind the pillow.
"I can't believe you."
A quiet laugh escaped Khae.
"I wanted to see what you'd do."
"You trapped me."
"I observed."
"That's worse."
Khae laughed again.
The sound was soft.
Unhurried.
The kind of laugh Aiah realized she only heard when it was just the two of them.
Aiah lowered the pillow just enough to peek at her.
"...You're enjoying this."
"A little."
