Summer had a way of slowing everything down.
For Aiah, it meant mornings without alarms and afternoons spent updating her résumé, helping Ivy and Gwen around the house, or simply enjoying the rare luxury of having nowhere she absolutely needed to be. It meant longer breakfasts, quieter streets, and the kind of lazy heat that made even the most urgent problems feel like they could wait until tomorrow.
For everyone else, summer meant something different.
It meant making the most of the break before fourth year arrived.
It meant squeezing in plans, catching up with friends, and pretending they weren't all secretly counting down the days until school started again.
One afternoon, the girls' group chat buzzed nonstop.
Christine:
Emergency.
Gwen:
Here we go again.
Nica:
Who got into trouble this time?
Christine:
Nobody.
Christine:
I'm just bored.
Yves:
That's your emergency?
Christine:
Exactly.
Aiah could practically hear Christine's dramatic sigh through the screen. She smiled to herself and kept reading.
Christine:
We need to do something.
Gwen:
Like what?
Christine:
Anything.
Nica:
That is not a plan.
Christine:
It's a vibe.
Yves:
A terrible one.
Before another message could come in, Khae replied.
Khae:
Can't today.
Almost immediately...
Christine:
😮
Christine:
Excuse me?
Gwen:
Busy?
Khae:
Lindtsey just asked now if I could help at Mezzo this summer.
Aiah looked up from her phone.
She hadn't heard about that.
She read the message again, just to make sure she hadn't missed anything.
Khae, working at Mezzo?
That sounded both surprising and completely believable at the same time.
A few seconds later, another message appeared.
Khae:
Her grandfather said he'd pay us.
Christine:
Wait...
Christine:
YOU HAVE A SUMMER JOB?
Khae:
More like summer training.
Khae:
I'm more excited about learning how everything works.
Nica:
That actually sounds like you.
Yves:
It really does.
Gwen:
So you're officially a café girl now?
Khae:
I guess so?
