The next afternoon was unusually quiet.
For once, Mezzo wasn't rushing with orders or crowded with people trying to escape the heat.
A few customers sat by the windows, soft music drifted through the café, and the whole place had settled into a calm that felt almost unfamiliar.
It had been a month since Khae started, and the silence no longer felt awkward.
It felt comfortable.
Angela leaned on the counter and looked around.
"...This is suspicious."
Fea glanced up from where she was stacking napkins.
"Quiet is suspicious now?"
"Too peaceful."
Khae, who was wiping down a table nearby, laughed under her breath.
"You two complain either way."
Angela folded her arms.
"Consistency is important."
Fea nodded once.
"Especially in suffering."
Khae smiled to herself and went back to the table.
A moment later, Angela reached under the counter and pulled out a small tin.
Fea looked up.
"What's that?"
"Entertainment."
"That's not an answer."
Angela opened the tin and revealed a deck of cards.
Khae paused.
"You brought cards to work?"
Angela looked offended.
"I brought cards for morale."
Fea stared at her.
"You brought cards because you're bored."
"That too."
Khae leaned on the counter, interested now.
"What game?"
Angela grinned.
"Anything you want."
Fea immediately narrowed her eyes.
"That sentence is never reassuring."
They ended up playing a ridiculous game Angela claimed she had learned from a cousin.
Fea said it looked made up.
Angela said all games were made up if you thought about them long enough.
Khae listened to the rules for exactly thirty seconds before deciding they were, in fact, made up.
Still, she played.
And somehow, annoyingly, she was good at it.
Fea stared at the cards in Khae's hand.
"How are you winning?"
Khae blinked.
"I'm not trying to."
"That's worse."
Angela laughed so hard she had to set her cards down.
Fea pointed at her.
