Anna's Pov
I paced towards the lunchroom, ready to devour the food the staff had picked for the day. In books, people act as if school food is some kind of disgusting mush, sometimes not even edible. However, the food in my school is nothing like that. It's actually pretty delicious.
As I arrived at the lunchroom, I took a whiff of air, noticing the scent of my favorite food; pizza.
I rushed to the lunch line, waiting impatiently for the person in front of me to decide what to eat. Ugh! By the time he was done, I would be dead, buried six feet underground.
After I had finished gathering my food, I sauntered over to my usual table, waiting for Riley to arrive. She had come back from her family reunion last night. I stood on my tippy toes, trying to catch a glimpse of her.
"Well, well, well. Isn't it little miss Ally? Ooh, Halloween is tonight. Why are you wearing your hideous costume now?" Ava snickered, with her Barbie Blobs right behind her.
"It's Anna by the way. And why wear a costume Ava? Your face is horrifying enough." I shot back.
"Shut your little mouth or else!" Ava threatened.
"Or else what?!" I arched my eyebrow, challenging her. I rolled my eyes as I spun around on my heel and started walking in the other direction.
"Or else this." She snatched a two milk cartons from the table behind her, her eyes now filling with mischief. She strutted towards me, and poured the milk on top of my head.
The milk drenched my clothes, soaking my hair and body. To make matters worse, I accidentally slipped on the liquid and fell flat on my butt. I could hear the laughs and cackles coming from every where in the lunchroom.
I glanced up, milk still dripping down my forehead, and my heart instantly dropped. There, I saw David, who stood right beside Ava, his arm slinged around her shoulder. He stared at me, watching my misery, my humilation, my heartbreak. I can't believe I ever started to think we could have been on good terms with each other.
All of a sudden, my vision starts to cloud with tears forming in my eyes.
Please, don't cry. Don't cry.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Great.
My embarrassment continued when Ava cackled. She yelled, "Oh my gosh! She's crying! Aww Anna needs her mommy!", making the entire lunchroom laugh louder. This is a nightmare. And yet, David hasn't even thought about helping me.
"Oh my gosh! Anna!" I recognized as Riley's voice. She dashed over to me, turning over to the crowd and yelling, "Get away from her! You low-life freaks! I swear, you rely on others' lives because you guys don't have one to pay attention to. So stop stalking and mind your own business for once!"
Even though some students started to exit the scene, many were still present, watching my every move.
"Here," she offered, holding out her hand. "Let's get you cleaned up." My best friend pulled me up, protectively keeping me by her side.
As we started trudging out of the cafeteria, I stopped in my tracks.
"Wait," I halted her. Then, I stomped angrily towards David, who still has his stupid arm over Ava's shoulder. I stopped right in front of him. Bringing out my right hand, I slapped across his face with all my might.
"How could you!" I yelled, my voice starting to crack. "A-and to think.. that we could've at least been friends again someday. Well, I'm not one bit suprised that I was wrong. I hate you, I'll finish this freakin project by myself. Whatever it takes to never see you again."
I shakily walked over to Riley, who had been glaring daggers at David the whole time. If looks could kill, David would be a pile of ash right now.
Oh, only if that could be true...
As we slowly exited out of the lunchroom, Riley whispered in my ear, "Don't look back."
