Chapter 9

I was confused. What does he mean, "this party won't be it." Luke explained by saying, "Although I'm giving Riley a chance, it doesn't mean I'm giving everyone she's inviting to that party a chance." I nodded my head slowly and said, "Riiiiiiiiight." Calum came in and walked past us saying, "Luke doesn't like people. He's not a people person."

Nicole: Were you listening to the whole conversation?

Calum: Well how could I not? I'm in the room next to you and you guys just keep on rambling on about this stupid party and Randy.

Nicole: Riley, Calum. It's Riley.

Calum: Whatever. God, girls have such complicated names. (Walks out).

Nicole: So, Luke?

Luke: Hm?

Nicole: How are you gonna give Riley a chance?

Luke: I don't know. I'll have to think about it.

Nicole: Seriously?

Luke: Yes. Now do you have any homework?

Nicole: No.

Luke: Then go clean your room.

Nicole: What gives you the impression that my room is messy?

Luke: Well is it clean?

Nicole: No.

Luke: Exhibit A. Go clean your room.

Nicole: Fine.

I went upstairs to my room and started to clean. I was being really lazy so I pretty much just shoved things in my drawers and closet. LOL, don't act like I'm the only one who's done that before. 😅 Anyway, while cleaning, I heard the phone ring downstairs. Luke or someone's probably going to answer it. Wonder who it could be. Hmm... For some odd reason, Matthew popped into my head. I haven't talked to him in so long. Where could he be? Maybe I should text him. I grabbed my iPod without finishing cleaning and texted Matthew, "Hey Matt. What's up? We haven't talked in soooo long." He didn't reply immediately. Not that it got me worried or anything. He's probably distracted in schoolwork or something. I don't know. It's probably not my business. Just before I was about to turn off my iPod, under my text it said, "Read: 5:25 PM". I hesitated to turn off my iPod as I waited for his response.

Matt: I've just been a little busy. How r u

Nicole: pretty good. What r u busy doing?

Matt: just random things. It's nothing really

Nicole: well if it was nothing u wouldn't be busy working on it. Come on just tell me

Matt: it's complicated.

Nicole: how so?

Matt: idk. Let's talk about something else

Nicole: well ok. What do u wanna talk about

Matt: idk what do u wanna talk about

Nicole: idk

Matt: well if we don't have anything to talk about we might as well go now

Nicole: wow. U sound A LOT like Riley right now

Matt: what how?

Nicole: Riley always says that when we have nothing to talk about

Matt: well anyway i should go

Nicole: did something come up?

Matt: no. I just should. Bye babe

Nicole: bye?

I was confused as to why Matthew was being so secretive. We haven't talked in so long and this is how he treats me? I feel like we're dating for nothing. What's the point? We don't do anything. I mean, I liked him a lot for the first month or two but now what's going on? I miss when I loved him. Now I just like him. Maybe somebody my age should NOT be using the word love. It is way too strong of a word for a 13-year-old to be saying about someone of the opposite gender. Geez, something really is off. I need to do some thinking. All of a sudden, Luke walked into my room and said, "Nicole, what are you doing on your iPod? I told you to clean your room." I looked up and replied, "Oh. Uh, yeah. I'm sorry. I got distracted."

Luke: Did somebody text you?

Nicole: Uh, no. I texted somebody.

Luke: Well then that's not getting distracted. That's called stalling. Keep cleaning your room.

Nicole: Okay.
