Chapter 11

THE NEXT DAY

I just finished getting ready for school as I brushed my hair once more and threw my backpack over my shoulder. I went downstairs and just when I was about to leave the door, Calum called me over and was like, "Oh, Nicole. You're not going to school today." I furrowed my eyebrows. "What do you mean I'm not going to school today?" I asked curiously.

Calum: You have a doctor's appointment at 9:15.

Nicole: Can't you just pick me up at 9:00?

Calum: Nicole, your school starts at 9:10.

Nicole: Well why didn't you tell me I had an appointment before I got all ready?

Calum: Well so-rry.

I took my backpack off and dropped it on the ground. I walked over to the couch and sat down as I turned on the TV. Calum looked at me and said, "Well are you gonna pick that up or what?"

Nicole: Pick what up?

Calum: Your backpack.

Nicole: I'll pick it up when we go. When are we going?

Calum: When you pick up your backpack.

I stared at Calum for a few seconds and then sighed. I walked over to my backpack and picked it up. I heard laughing. I hadn't even noticed the other guys were watching us argue. I ignored and said, "What is this doctors appointment for and how long is it going to take?"

Calum: It's from 9:15 to 10:15 and you need a vaccination.

Nicole: What's a vaccination?

Calum: It's just a needle that they put into your arm --

I dropped my bag by accident and interrupted Calum. "Hold up. Needle? Nobody told me I was going to get a needle," I said. They all stared at me confused. Luke said to me, "Nicole, it's just one needle. You've gotten needles before, haven't you?" I ignored his question and said, "Do I need to get this vaccination? Like, is it mandatory?"

Calum: For all patients in your age group, yes.

Nicole: No.

Calum: What do you mean, 'no'?

Nicole: I mean, no. I'm not taking that needle.

Ashton: Um, yes, you are, Nicole. You don't have a choice.

Nicole: (crosses arms) Well I'm not moving from this spot.

Michael: Nicole, why are you making such a big fuss about one needle?

Nicole: 'Cause I don't like needles! No way am I getting one today.

Luke: Nicole, one prick and then it's done.

Nicole: I don't care.

Calum: Nicole, you're going. Come on, let's go.

Nicole: No.

Calum: Did you hear me, Nicole?

Nicole: I heard you perfectly. But did you hear me? I said I don't wanna go.

All of a sudden, Calum's phone rang. He went into the living room to answer it. Ashton said to me, "Nicole, just go to the appointment. The needle won't last long." I shook my head no. I'll admit it. I was being stubborn. But I was not gonna give in to getting that needle. Calum came back from the living room moments later and said, "You know, you're lucky, Nicole. I just got a call from the studio. All 4 of us need to go for recording so I can't drive you to your appointment." I couldn't help from smile vaguely. I said, "Saved by the bell." Calum said, "But I know someone who can." My smile faded immediately. This time, Calum was the one smiling. It's like he tore the smile right off my face and stole it from me.
