The door knob rattled and I just sat there frozen. The fear that I had was completely irrational. I mean, what kind of robber, intruder, criminal, etc. would KNOCK before breaking in? But in the moment, I wasn't thinking about whether it made sense or not. And so the only thing I could think of was to call someone. I yelled in fear, "LUKE!" He was just the first person who came to mind.

Just at that moment, the door opened, and I gasped. When I looked to see who it was, my fear dialled down immediately.

"Oh, hello, Nicole," spoke Arzaylea from the door. Looking at her hand, she was holding a pair of keys between her fingers, as she had her purse hanging off of her other shoulder. "Did you... umm... not hear the door?" She asked confused.

I stammered, "Oh, umm, yeah, I did, and I was just about to answer it... but I..." I looked at my position, and clearly I was sitting down, so it didn't quite look like I was in a position to answer the door, so I made something up. "I was coming down the stairs and I fell, and that's when you came in."

"Oh," said Arzaylea, "Are you okay?" She asked politely tilting her head.

"Um, yeah, I'm fine now," I replied standing up and pretending to brush off any dirt or wrinkles in my clothes from falling down.

Luke then suddenly appeared at the top of the balcony and called down, "Oh, you're here! I didn't even hear you come in." He looked at me on the stairs and said, "Nicole, did you open the door for Arzaylea?"

I said, "Uhh..." But before I could answer, Arzaylea interrupted me and said, "Yes, she did. She was very polite and generous to do that for me." She looked at me and smiled.

Luke said, "Oh. Is that why you called me, Nicole?"

"Um, yeah, it is."

"Oh, you just sounded a bit... Well... scared when you called me," said Luke.

Arzaylea jumped in again and said, "That was probably because she fell on the stair -- I mean, she fell on the way to answer the door... for me." The thing I was surprised about was that Arzaylea was saving me from getting in trouble. But why? She knows I hate her. Is she trying to suck up? Wait. No, Nicole. Enough with your silly trust issues. Maybe Arzaylea was legitimately being nice to you. Have you ever thought of that?

I went upstairs passing Luke as he went downstairs to greet Arzaylea. Instead of going back to my room, I decided to go to Calum's. His door was open and he was in there laying on his bed looking at his phone, smiling. I said, "Hi, Calum."

He looked at me and said, "Oh, hey."

"Arzaylea just got here," I stated trying  to make conversation.

He continued to smile and responded with a little chuckle, "I know."

I furrowed my eyebrows and said, "Um, then why didn't you answer the door for her?"

He said looking straight at me, "Because I thought you were going to get it. I heard you going downstairs anyway."

"Oh," I said. He didn't question why I didn't answer the door because he obviously knew why. I stood there in silence.

"Good excuse though," he mentioned looking back at his phone.

I looked at him confused and replied, "Um, what?"

"Your excuse. You know the one. Uhh, I was coming to get the door, but I fell. Tehehe," he imitated my girly voice.

I responded, "Oh, you heard that."

"Of course I heard that," he said, "But honestly, that whole thing that just played out downstairs -- PERFECT. I mean, that lie literally could NOT have gone any better," he laughed, "You really need to thank Arzaylea for saving your butt there. But you wanna know what I think? I think it's kinda funny how you got scared of who it was going to be. Did you not know that Luke recently gave Arzaylea a key to the house?" He laughed.

"What? No, I did not know that. When was this?" I asked confused.

"Just last week," he responded. He laughed again and said, "Seriously, Nicole. What sort of intruder would KNOCK before trying to break in?"

I rolled my eyes. "Ugh, I know. I wasn't thinking properly. But how did you know I was scared at all?"

"You called Luke in like, the most scared voice ever," he said, "Remember?"

"Oh, yeah. Well how do you know I didn't actually fall like I said I did?" I asked crossing my arms.

"Because I would've heard it, of course. Duh!" He said.

"Ugghhh..."
