I went to the washroom, and after I had finished, I went to my room and sat in my chair. I had nothing to do. This is what it always comes to. I always end up being bored. Often, I'll get a text from a random person, but this time, nothing. Silence.

It was 6:40 and I decided to just check Instagram. Nothing new. "Nicole, where'd you go?" Called Luke from the living room.

I got up off my bed and walked to the balcony. "I'm up here," I called back to Luke. He looked up at me.

"Oh, I forgot to tell you. You have a dentist appointment tomorrow at 3:00, so I'll be picking you up early," he told me.

"Alright," I replied. My school ends at 3:00, but the bell rings at 2:50, so he's probably going to pick me up around 2:30.

THE NEXT DAY AT SCHOOL
IN THE CAFETERIA

"Guess what? I'm getting my braces off next week!" Said my best friend, Jennifer.

"OMG, that's great!" I replied.

Jennifer is like, so pretty. She's one of those people who have always rocked braces and glasses together. I would never be able to do that.

"I'm so excited. I'm gonna be free! No more painful torture. No more limits to what foods I can or can't eat. And most of all, no more stupid metal mouth," said Jennifer.

"Boy, braces sound terrible. Speaking of which, I have a dentist appointment today. Luke's picking me up early."

"Ha, just pray you don't get braces. Wouldn't that be ironic?" Jennifer told me.

"I doubt I'll have to. My teeth are pretty straight."

"Yeah, you're right. You're probably never going to need braces. Lucky you," said Jennifer, "What time are you getting picked up?"

"Next class at around 2:40," I responded.

"Well lunch ends in like, 10 minutes. You want to start going to our lockers now?"

"Sure," I said.

Jennifer and I got up and walked out of the cafeteria. Our lockers are pretty close to each other. We put our lunch bags away and grabbed our next period binders. Then we went to the washroom to go hang.

"Hey, can you keep a secret?" Asked Jennifer while she was in a stall. I was busy looking in the mirror.

"Of course I can," I replied.

"Well I have a crush on someone," she said.

"Ooh, who is it?"

"Promise you won't judge?"

"I promise. Just tell me."

"Well.... I have a crush on Matt."

I froze in the mirror while in the middle of fixing my hair.

"Matt Planta," she said.

I wasn't pleased with her answer. Matt Planta was MY crush. But she doesn't know that.

"Nicole, are you still here?" Called Jennifer.

"Yeah, I am, I just, uh... I was just fixing my hair, but you know what? I-I don't know why you would like Matt Planta. I mean, he's not even that.... Uh... that, erm..." To be honest, I tried to come up with a reason of why she shouldn't like him, but I couldn't. He didn't really have any flaws. He was cute, funny, nice, popular, and super chill.

"I knew you were going to judge me," said Jennifer as the toilet flushed.

I felt guilty.  I replied, "No, I'm not judging you, Jennifer. I just... I don't know why you would like him."

She opened the door and came out. "Well why wouldn't I like him? He's cute, funny, nice, popular, and super chill."

My thoughts exactly. Jennifer began to wash her hands. In the reflection of the mirror, I stared at her. This isn't good at all. Jennifer had a WAYYY bigger chance with Matt than I do for so many reasons.

1. I'm not allowed to date (Major reason).
2. She's way prettier than me (Could be debated, but for now let's stick with it).
3. They seem like they'd be the perfect couple!

Whats the point of Jennifer even having a crush? She could literally walk up to any guy and be like, "You. Boyfriend. Now." Gosh, I wish I was as gorgeous as Jennifer. Sigh.

Jennifer looked at me in the mirror and I quickly looked away.

"Is something wrong?" She asked.

"No, not at all," I replied calmly. I just felt kinda sad and the only thing I could do was hope that Jennifer didn't get any burst of confidence and go ask Matt out.

"OMG. I know what's wrong," she said. I looked at her.

"What?" I said.

"Nicole, don't you ever worry. If me and Matt ever date, I won't put him before my best friend," she told me.

"Um, what?" I repeated.

"That's why you're sad, isn't it? Because you think I'm going to forget about you if I ever get a boyfriend. Right?"

"Um, yeah. That's right," I lied. It was a good enough excuse at the time.

"Well you don't have to worry. If I go on a date with Matt, you're coming," she said.

My eyes widened. That didn't seem like such a bad thing. "Really?" I said excitedly.

"Of course! Everything I do with Matt, I'll do with you. It'll never just me and him."

"But..." I paused, "Don't you think Joey might feel a little bit... You know... Irritated if I'm always around you guys?"

"No boyfriend of mine is going to be irritated with my best friend."

"But what if they are?"

"Then they're not my boyfriend. Psh."

I couldn't help but smile. Wow. Jennifer is so nice! I mean, I already knew she was nice but this is amazing! In fact, this kind of makes me want to help her and Joey get together. Think of all the benefits.

1. I get to hang out with my crush without actually "getting together".
2. I'm not breaking the rules that the guys told me because I'm not dating anybody.
3. Considering this guy's popular, maybe it'll get me popular too!

I hope I'm not going off on the wrong path here...
