Chapter 17

After washing the dishes, I went back to the living room and saw Michael watching TV. I was literally just going back and forth. I went upstairs to go find Ashton and I saw him in his room searching through boxes. I walked in and asked, "Hey, Ashton. Whatcha' doing?" He looked at me and said while continuing to search, "I'm just looking through some of my things. Hey, look what I found." I heard rattling in the box and all of a sudden, Ashton pulled out a pair of earrings.

Nicole: Um, why do you have a pair of earrings in your box?

Ashton: Oh, I remember where this was from. Long story.

Nicole: (sits down on bed) I've got time.

Ashton: (stares at Nicole) You're a very curious girl, aren't you, Nicole?

Nicole: Maybe.

Ashton: Well if you really wanna know what happened between me and her --

Nicole: I do. Tell me.

Ashton: Well long story short, my girlfriend had a really, REALLY bad memory and one day she left her earrings at my house and the next time she came over, she found the earrings, thought they were some other girl's and assumed I was cheating.

Nicole: And so she left you?

Ashton: Yep.

Nicole: (laughs) That's so funny!

Ashton: Yeah, I guess it was kinda funny. But to be honest, I never really did miss her.

Nicole: Really?

Ashton: Really.

What Ashton was saying made me think about Matt. Would I miss him if we broke up? I decided to ask Ashton straight up. I mean, I can talk to him about practically anything.

Nicole: Ash, I've been thinking about Matt lately and...

Ashton: Aww. Is something wrong?

Nicole: Well I don't know. It's just, we never talk anymore and I just think that we shouldn't go out.

I gasped after saying that because that was the first time I had ever said something like that about Matthew. Ashton wasn't surprised though.

Ashton: Let me guess. That was your first time saying that out loud.

Nicole: Uh, yeah. How did you know?

Ashton: Well sometimes when we think deeply about something, we always have that little thought in the back of our minds that we know is back there, but never want to say it. We hint about it by telling ourselves the reasons it should happen but we never say what those reasons lead to. I don't expect you to understand any of this.

Nicole: No, not really.

Ashton: Well maybe when you're older, you'll understand.

Nicole: Probably. But what do you think? Should I talk to Matt?

Ashton: I say give it some time. Try to fix things and if it's impossible to fix, end it there.

Nicole: You make it sound so easy.

Ashton: Maybe if you believe it's easy, it can be.
