The smell of rotten corpses, filled the air and the only sound other than the moans and growls of the undead, was the heavy breathing of young Sam Jones. All night she had been running. Running from the undead.
Running from her past.
Trying to run from the present and future, but there was no escape from this cruel world...Unless...She reached into her boot and pulled out the small gun, her father had given her just before a herd of the undead came and ripped her family apart. She barely made it out alive. She checked the amount of bullets she had left.
Just the one.
Sighing she pressed the gun to her temple and layed her finger on the trigger, just as she was about to shoot, a loud scream came from behind her. Putting the gun back, she quickly but quietly ran towards the source of the scream.
As she ran, she couldn't help but feel stupid. She nearly went against her Mother's wishes. She remembered the exact words she spoke before the herd had arrived.
"No matter what happens I will always be with you. If you're lost and missing me, at night look up at the sky and you'll see the brightest star shining. That will be me. Even if you can't see me I'll be there. This world will try and ruin you. If something seems too easy don't do it, if something seems too hard don't do it. You will beat this world. Promise me you will."
"I promise."
She couldn't believe how she almost broke her promise. Never again will she come so close to breaking it again.
She felt her heartbreak at the memory of her Mother. She felt the tears threatning to come out of her eyes, but the sight of a Mother and her child getting devoured sent her over the edge. She fell to her knees and let the tears out.
Her crying had caught the attention of a near by living corpse, as the corpse hobbled closer, her tears fell faster, she hadn't noticed the corpse.
Just as the corpse was about to sink it's teeth into her shoulder, an arrow flew into it's head, causing the growls to come to an end and the body fell to the floor with a loud "thud" causing Sam to jump out of her skin. Eyeing the now dead corpse, she slowly lifted herself up off the ground and turned around.
"Ye okay?" The man in front of her spoke with a Southeren accent.
Not answering the man, she quickly reached for her gun and aimed it at him. The man stood there unfazed, staring at Sam, eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?" She asked, holding the gun with one hand as she quickly wiped her eyes with the other.
"Did ye know them people?" He asked, nodding his head in the direction of the Mother and Daughter who once were living people but are now walking corpses.
"I asked you a question. Who. Are. You?" Sam growled.
The man smirked and walked closer to Sam. She shuffled backwards, and ended up falling over the corpse the man in front of her put down. He reached out with his hand, Sam watched as he tugged his arrow out of the undead's head and wiped it clean.
He stood back and stared at Sam, she stared back trying not to show how scared she was.
"If you don't answer the question, I'll shoot you." She threatened.
The man chuckled and crossed his arms.
"'M Daryl Dixon. And I just saved yer life."
