Sam and Amy sat in front of the water and watched Sophia and Carl play in the water, splashing eachother and laughing.
"Look at them, they're so innocent. The world has ended and they're still having fun." Amy sighed.
"Atleast they're not worrying."
Amy slowly nodded her head. An idea popped into her head and she turned to Sam with a smirk.
"Why don't we have some fun?" She asked.
Sam looked at her confused. A thousand thoughts ran through her mind. She didn't know what Amy meant but all she could think about was...Something different to what Amy had in mind.
"A-And what would we be doing?" Sam asked feeling herself becoming nervous.
Amy stood up and proceeded to take her shoes off. Sam watched her and Amy rolled her eyes and knelt down, taking Sam's boots off.
"Let's go for a swim." Amy grinned.
"In our clothes?" Sam asked raising an eyebrow.
"Yes in our clothes. I don't think a ten year old boy and eleven year old girl want to see us naked, or just in our bra and underwear. Come on! It's warm out. We'll dry quickly." Amy laughed.
Sam sighed and stood up, following Amy into the water who turned around to face Sam with a smile.
"See isn't this nice?" Amy asked before she dunked her head underwater.
When she popped back up, Sam was nowhere to be seen.
"Sam?" Amy asked confused.
"Boo." Sam whispered in her ear from behind her.
Amy quickly turned around only to be splashed.
"SAM!" Amy gasped.
Sam laughed as Amy pouted at her. Sam stopped laughing as she looked at Amy's lips. When people pouted, Sam would give in to whatever they wanted.
"Free shot." Sam offered as she spread her arms out.
Amy smiled and splashed Sam who dramatically threw her arms around.
Amy laughed and swam circles around Sam. Sam stayed in her spot, watching Amy go round and round.
"Don't make yourself dizzy. " Sam warned.
"Why? Will I drown?" Amy teased.
"I hope not." Sam said with concern in her voice.
Suddenly Amy stopped swimming and began to kick her legs in a panic, her head going under the water and bobbing back up for a second.
"Sam! Help!" Amy coughed.
Sam knew she was playing around...Atleast a part of her did.
"Sam, I-I-." Amy got cut off as she went under the water and didn't come back up.
Sam started to panic. She quickly dived under the water and dragged Amy back up.
"Amy?"
No movement. No reaction. No nothing.
"Amy." Sam said as her voice cracked slightly.
Suddenly Amy wrapped her arms around Sam and giggled.
"My hero." She whispered.
Sam felt angry, but relieved at the same time.
"Don't do that again. Please." Sam begged.
Amy moved her head so she could look at Sam, she saw how much it hurt her.
"I'm sorry." Amy apologised.
She bit her lip waiting for Sam to say something. Sam had a tight grip on Amy and it didn't look like she would be letting go.
"It's fine." Sam shrugged.
Amy put some of Sam's hair behind her ear and leant in.
"HEY SAM! COME PLAY WITH US!" Carl yelled as he swam over to Sam and Amy.
Sam let go of Amy who backed away a little.
"What game?" She asked.
"Polo." Carl grinned.
A short time later after they had played polo, Carl and Sophia ran to their mothers to dry off whilst Amy and Sam layed on the sand.
"I hope Andrea is okay." Amy sighed.
"She will be." Sam said as she held Amy's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
Amy turned her head to look at Sam and gave her a small smile. She shuffled closer to Sam and snuggled into her side.
Sam wrapped an arm around her and stroked her arm slowly.
"You're a good friend Sam." Amy whispered.
"Thanks. You are too."
Amy looked at Sam and Sam looked at Amy.
Sam moved her hand to touch Amy's cheek but instead found herself hissing in pain. Amy moved quickly and gently grabbed Sam's hand.
"What happend?" Amy asked concerned.
"I don't know. I moved my hand and then I felt a pain, like glass cutting my hand." Sam said through gritted teeth.
Amy inspected her hand and through the blood made out a shiny object stuck in her hand.
"Well you were right about it being glass." Amy smiled sadly.
Amy helped Sam up and they walked back the camp.
"Dale has a first aid kit, we'll get it cleaned up." Amy told Sam, as she held back tears.
"Why the fuck are you crying?" Sam asked confused.
"It's my fault." Amy replied as a single tear fell from her eye.
"Shut up. It wasn't." Sam said wiping away the tear.
Amy smiled and they made their way back to camp. Once they reached camp, Shane looked over and saw Sam's hand.
"What happend?!" He asked angry and concerned.
"I just cut my hand Shane. Back off." Sam snapped.
Shane shook his head and stormed off.
Amy led Sam into the RV and grabbed the first aid kit.
Amy and Sam sat down at the table and Amy slowly cleaned around the cut and then proceeded to take the glass out as gently as she could. Sam hissed in pain and refrained from swearing.
It didn't take long until Sam's hand was in a bandage.
"There all done." Amy smiled.
Sam mumbled a thanks and went outside and sat at the camp fire with everyone else.
Amy soon joined and the rest of the evening was spent with story telling and getting to know everyone a little better. Every now and then, Amy would look at Sam and smile to herself. Sam caught her once or twice, but pretended she didn't notice.
This was the first time in a long time she felt loved and wanted, she hoped nothing would change, but in this new world everything can change in the space of a minute and Sam was going to find that out sooner rather than later.
