I had come home and set down my stuff in my room. Alise and Carter would be at my house at six for the plan to ignite, well that was more of an exaggeration I mean the plan wouldn't start until after midnight and it would be in secret. Of course Moose had everything planned and he wanted to start as soon as possible but I told him to wait. I wanted to take a nap because I knew that this would be a long night. I had dreams again but they were too blurred but there was this one scene I had never seen before.
I was in water and I felt helpless, I couldn't breathe but someone had saved me. I felt like I was coughing and I saw a boy, his face was blurred but he was huffing too.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"Thanks, I think so." He hit me on the head and I complained, "What's that for?"
"Be careful next time, you never know what might happen." he said.
"Sorry." I said. He held out his hand and just smiled, I think he said his name but I couldn't hear it quite clearly, I got up and panted hardly. This was no dream, it's a fragment of my memory that I've either lost or forgotten in the past years. I came downstairs to see Grandma and Grandfather reading books, I sat on the couch facing the both of them.
"What is it dear?"
"Can you at least tell me one thing?" I asked.
"What is it?" Grandfather asked setting down his newspaper.
"Is there anyone related to me that's still alive today?" They both looked at each other and nodded. Grandmother had called for Moose to get the telephone.
"Katie, those two boys that came that day, they were your brothers." he said.
"I have brothers? I have living siblings?" My voice was wavering, I don't know if I was scared or happy but I don't know what to think. Moose came with the telephone and handed to Grandfather, he started dialing and put it on speaker.
"What is it?" the voice said.
"Hey, don't be like that." another one said, it was those two boys from three days ago, are they my brothers?
"Go into a private room, both of you, there's something you need to hear." Grandfather said. I heard some static but I guess they went into a private room, the door on their line sounded like they locked it.
"What is it that you want?" one of them said.
"Kevin, Elliot, there's someone who would like to talk to you." He lifted up the phone and handed it to me, "Katie, put it off speaker and talk privately if you want."
"Katie?" they both said. I put it off speaker and lifted the phone, I was trembling a little bit, and I went up to my room and locked the door and put the phone to my ear.
"Hello?" I said.
"Katie, is that really you?"
"Yes, how do you do?"
"You're okay, I'm so glad, Kevin, she's okay."
"I told you so, we don't need to worry, and grandfather has everything taken care of."
"Are you my brothers?" They kept silent for a bit and then I heard voices. "Yes," one of them finally said.
"How come you never came to meet me, or even take a look at me, when you were here three days ago you didn't even look at me."
"Katie, we want to protect you, everything that grandfather and Elliot and I have done is to protect you."
"I don't want to be protected! I want to see you, for the past 10 years of my life I've lived with people that are nothing to me! I don't remember anything before 7, who am I?" They kept silent and I heard some sighing.
"We're sorry, we want to tell you everything but it would be too painful."
"At least tell me about yourselves." I begged.
"I'm Elliot the oldest of your family, the one who runs the entire company in London." Elliot said.
"I'm Kevin, his second here in our family who loves you very much." So the engagement has nothing to do with me being heir to the company, but it has to do something with my past.
"Will I see you two soon?" I asked.
"Yes," Elliot said, "We're hoping one day you will come to London to live in your hometown again." London was my hometown, where I was born so why am I all the way here?
"Call us anytime, your brothers will come at your aid whenever you need us." Kevin said.
"Yeah, I hope to see you soon."
"Us too." they said and we both hung up. I had a family, a family that loved me so much, I leaned against my door and my hands just dropped, I had tears coming down and I didn't know if they were joy or sadness. I didn't know much of my past life and I wanted to know so much, I trembled down on the door and just sat there thinking what maybe I was like back then. Someone started knocking on my door.
"Who is it?" I asked.
"Alise, now let me in." she said pushing the door, she came in and looked at me.
"What happened to you?"
"Heh, all this time I believed in expressing who you are but now I have no idea who I am." I said. I buried my head into my arms and knees and just sat there. Alise kept silent for a few minutes and then opened my curtains.
"It's a bright day, why keep the curtains down?" she said, she opened the windows too, and then she went into my closet.
"You say you don't like any of your dresses but they would look adorable on you," she said setting all my dresses on the bed, she then came over and pulled me up.
"What are you doing?" I said getting very irritated.
"Come." she said, she pulled me over and made me sit in front of the mirror, she yanked out my pony tail and started brushing it, she let out a big breath and then, "What's wrong?" she asked.
"What?"
"You know you can tell me anything right? I mean I may not be like Charlie but I'm still your friend." she said.
"You consider me as your friend?" I asked, she nodded and kept brushing my hair,
"So are you going to tell me what's wrong with you?" I sighed, she was so narrow minded and wanted to get the job done so quickly.
"Everything before I turned 7, I can't seem to remember any of it, and I don't remember who my real family is and I don't know who they are."
"What seems to be the problem?"
"They're dead." She stopped brushing and sighed. "I don't remember them dying, I don't even remember that I had brothers let alone knew them."
"Katie, listen, I'm sure your parents don't want you crying right now, there must be a good reason as to why you don't remember any of this stuff, why you can't remember your brothers."
"Those two people that were shouting at my grandfather, they were my brothers and I didn't even recognize them. I'm a failure. I don't even know who my family is." She suddenly slapped me, it didn't hurt but it was a surprise.
"Get a grip on yourself! So what you didn't even recognize them, you can't blame yourself. You've lived with people that aren't your real family! Stop being like this, go back to being that person who has compassion, you will remember them, and you will remember your real family." she said shaking.
"Why? Why are you saying this? You have a family. You know who your family is!"
"No, I don't know who my family is because they've kept me hidden from the world, I only know who my brothers are but you made me realize the bond of family. You showed me that with Alice! So please, don't give up, you have a bond with your family." she said.
"What can I do? I don't remember anything?" She looked at me and crossed eyes.
"I will help you through this. We will find out about your past, I will always help you." At that moment, we cried into each other’s arm, we were both misfits of family and yet we believed in the bond of family. We really were a pair, a pair that would last forever.
