We came inside and she offered us some tea, we complied with her offer and she sat down. She looked at us as if we were psychos as she set down the tea cups.
"Why such a serious face, drink." she said taking a sip. We looked at each other and did as she demanded. I looked at Nick as we drank some tea, it was bitter.
"Do you have any sugar and milk?" I asked. She nodded and went to the kitchen to put some in bowls. I shouldered Nick and looked at him with wide eyes.
"Say something." I whispered-yelled.
"What am I supposed to say? I can't say 'Hey mom, I'm your lost kid that you gave up.' Can I?" He said looking at me with wide eyes.
"Just believe in yourself, it'll all come naturally." I said but in truth, I was scared too. What would she say? I've no idea who my mom or dad is and I've been living with a aunt who's never wanted me and a dad who's been lying to me. I thought dad was at least real but it wasn't the truth. She came back and I poured some milk while eying Nick and mixing it.
"Um Miss, what was your high school like?" Nick started abruptly.
"Just call me Candy. It was actually a heartfelt experience, why do you ask?"
"Did you ever fall in love?"
"Well I can't say I have, I may have had a fling or two." she said reminiscing about the past but then she looked at us. "Not that it's any of your business, are you two like stalkers?"
"No, actually we're here on a report."
"Report?"
"On a family tree."
"What do I have to do with your family tree?"
"I have everyone except the two most important people of my life." He said, he took out a cylinder looking thing and popped it open. There was a family tree and Nick was on there, he had two lines under his name. Under the lines was the name of his adopted parents while the other two lines on top of his name left blank. "I am a perfectionist, now you see, I seem to be missing two family members." he said fully opening the tree. She looked at the tree and kept quiet and murmured some things.
"I know this is a lot--"
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"You're my mo--"
"I have children, I had an experience in high school and I gave up that child."
"But--"
"No that child is gone, it was a mistake in high school, I'm with my husband and my two kids that I love dearly."
"But--"
"Look, if this is some kind of trick, you need to stop. I have no idea who you are and if you even think that I'm the mother that gave you up then you’re a sorry mistaken person." she said looking at us. We both knew she was lying or she was in denial that she ever had Nick. How could she say that, she's a mother so she could have been a little considerate?
