I look back at our old photographs
And I look at the way your eyes were shining
The way your hair was tousled
The way your arm hung around me.
And we used to run together so often
Into the flower-filled meadows
Hands linked and
So deeply in love.
The times in spring I would walk out of school
Just to see you waiting by the oak tree
And I would run into your arms
And we would go off, shyly glancing at the other occasionally.
And everything seemed so right
That one night we went to the carnival and
The soft rays of lights kissed our skin
The smell of caramel popcorn and sugary sweet candy in the air.
And when we went on the ferris wheel
You reached forward and told me I looked beautiful
And there were no need for words to close the gap between our lips
At that very moment.
But now those are just memories
And our love is a long forgotten storybook
That you threw away months ago
When you showed up at my door - eyes conflicted and pained.
And the words we lashed out at one another
They weren't the kindest things you'd hear
Full of hate and anger that
We'd never shared before.
And now my spring days
Instead of being greeted by your warm, smiling eyes
Are greeted with the crisp cold air of new beginning
But a lone one.
And it's many times that I
I sat by the windowsill half expecting your car
To appear in the driveway
But it remains empty, the gravel worn and old.
And sometimes I step out when it's raining outside
And the lightning flashes and the thunder sounds
Just to drown myself in the cold
To lose my tears amongst the droplets falling on my face.
