"Of course you can."
"You're the only thing I've had close to one since I was changed." Alex said and curled closer to me.
"Alex, what was the bad dream about?" I asked. He sat up and sat opposite Luke and me.
"It was scary, I was with my mom and dad, but then I was stolen, and never saw them again. Then you saved me Violet, and I dreamt that you were gone, and Luke was hurt…and I was alone, and had no one to love me." Alex explained starting to tear up.
"Alex, we love you so much, and we won't leave you." Luke said hugging Alex. I looked at the clock and it was nine.
"We should all get to bed." I said nodding to the clock.
"Right, I guess I'll be going then." Luke said as he started to get up, but Alex grabbed his arm.
"You said you wouldn’t leave…"
"Alex, I am just going back to my house, you know, where you stayed while Violet was gone. I'll see you tomorrow buddy." Luke said.
"Why can't you stay?" Alex asked. Luke looked at me for an answer.
"His own parents would be worried." I said to Luke's rescue.
"Oh…" Alex said disappointingly.
"I'll be back in the morning; you and Violet can hold the fort down. I will see you in the morning; I love you Alex, and sweet dreams." Luke said before kissing Alex's forehead.
The next day during a free period I talked to Luke about Alex. Luke said that he understands that kids have nightmares, but he does think that there is more to it.
"I was shocked when Alex asked to call you 'mommy'. I think that he is developing separation anxiety a bit. I mean, he didn’t want either of us to leave, and when we do he starts to freak out, and have nightmares…" Luke pointed out.
"So what do we do about it? I called Jason this morning to check on when he is going to be back, but he won't be back for a couple more weeks."
"I think we need to get him to hang out with friends." Luke suggested.
"He did bring this girl over once… maybe hanging out with friends would be the best." I said as I thought about it.
Luke and I continued our conversation for a while trying to figure out what the best thing to do would be until Jason got back and really helped us. I hadn’t seen Trace at all today…I'm guessing he didn’t come to school today.
"Violet." Someone said. I turned around to find the principal.
"Hello, what can I do for you?"
"We got a call from Alex's school?"
"Oh, what? What's wrong?" I asked.
"The teacher says that you need to go pick him up. Under guardians are you and Jason, and since he is out of town they called here. I will excuse you from one class period, but then you must be back here." The principal said as he walked away.
"I'll see you later Luke." I said as I ran out to the parking lot.
I jumped in the car, and started the engine and sped over to Alex's school. Luckily the address was in the car. The school was about twenty minutes away, and once I got there I found Alex's classroom. The teacher introduced herself, and said she had to talk to me privately.
"Violet, I am worried about Alex. This isn’t the first time he has…gotten upset."
"What do you mean?"
"This is the third time that he has started to tear up about being scared of being left alone." The teacher said worriedly.
"Where is he?" I asked with worry.
"He is in the class playing with one of his friends at the moment. I have a question though; it says that you and Jason are his guardians. You look like you're still in high school."
"Yes, I am, but I think Jason appointed me a guardian as well because he is always out of town." I explained.
"He was crying asking for his mom, where is she?" the teacher asked.
"He was orphaned about a year ago so he was old enough to remember her, and when we took him in, he was quite happy and fine, mainly glad to have a family." I said.
"Here, let's go see him." The teacher said walking into the classroom.
I saw Alex playing with I think the same girl he brought home a while ago. He seemed happy but I saw sadness in his eyes. The teacher called him, and when he saw me he ran up to me and jumped in my arms.
"Mommy! You came!" Alex said.
"I'm sorry, but you said…" the teacher started.
"He asked me last night if he could call me that." I said.
"She is! This is Violet; she saved me, and took care of me with Jason and Luke." Alex explained as the teacher stared at us.
"Alex, what's wrong sweetie?" I asked as I put him down.
"I missed you."
"But you were going to see me later today." I explained.
"I was afraid I wouldn’t see you though. I know you and Luke told me that you guys wouldn’t leave me, but that nightmare really scared me." Alex whispered.
"It's alright; it was just a bad dream. No one will be able to separate us." I assured.
"Where's Luke?" Alex asked.
"At school, we couldn't both come." I said.
"When will Jason be back?"
"In a couple weeks."
"How do I know you won't leave? I haven't seen you in forever!" Alex said.
"Trust me, I am done working. I completed my job, it's over for me. I am here alright."
"Okay… um since school is almost over, can my mommy take me home?" Alex asked the teacher with puppy dog eyes.
"Alright, but only this time."
"Speaking of time…what time is it?" I asked suddenly remembering that I only had an hour I was allowed to leave school.
"It's almost two." The teacher said.
"Okay, Alex, grab your things, you are going back to school with me, I don’t have time to bring you home." I said as he started to grab his bag.
We hopped in the car, and I sped off. I got to school right as the five minute bell rang. I grabbed my books and took Alex's hand and led him through the halls with me. I looked down for one second to see if Alex was okay when I bumped into someone. I looked up to find Trace.
