"Violet, who's the kid?"
"I can't talk right now, I've got International Relations." I said as I pushed past him.
I walked in and set my books down, and the teacher gave me a look, I asked if I could talk to him for a moment. I explained the situation and he agreed to let Alex sit in on the class as long as he stayed quiet. I made Alex promise to be patient and quiet. As Alex sat down next to me, Trace walked in and gave me a look then nodded to Alex and sat on the other side of me.
"Who is the kid?" Trace whispered.
"None of your business." I whispered.
"Thought we were friends…and friends don't keep secrets." Trace joked.
"Right…"
"Alright, now let's talk about the Nature versus Nurture argument." The teacher said.
The class went by pretty slowly, and I was surprised that Alex was quiet this whole time. I gave him paper and a pen, and he drew the whole period. He wouldn’t let me see it though. When the bell rang Alex gave me the picture. It was a picture of him holding hands with Luke and me, with Jason next to Luke. I smiled. He named us all, and the drawing was actually quite good for a kid his age. I then noticed Trace looking over my shoulder.
"Why are you labeled as mommy?" Trace asked quietly.
"Long story…" I said.
"Can I talk now?" Alex asked.
"Yeah, let's go find Luke okay?"
"Okay! Wait, mommy who is this?" Alex asked pointing at Trace.
"It's not nice to point Alex, and this is Trace." I said.
"Hi there Alex." Trace said giving a half smile.
"Hi…are you a friend of my mom's?" Alex asked.
"Um, we are classmates. But it was nice to meet you." Trace said.
Alex and I walked downstairs and found Luke. Luke saw Alex and gave me a confused look, but caught Alex as he ran and jumped in his arms. Alex hugged Luke tightly. Luke still was looking at me questioningly as other students were doing to us. Trace walked by and Alex said goodbye to Trace.
"How do you know him Alex?" Luke asked putting him down.
"I met him in mom's class." Alex said.
"Here is the better question, why are you here? What happened at school?" Luke asked crouching down to his level.
"I missed mommy, and thought that I wouldn’t see you guys again…the bad dream scared me daddy!" Alex said then realized what he said, "Sorry, I didn’t mean to…"
"It's okay Alex. But you know that we wouldn’t leave you."
"I know…I just panicked. I'm sorry I called you daddy, its just…"
"Alex, buddy, it's alright. If you want to call me that you can. It's up to you okay, as long as you know that we aren’t really your parents." Luke said.
"But…Violet saved me and took me in…isn’t that what happens when a mom adopts a child? So wouldn’t she be my mom from that? And wouldn’t you be dad since you are with her?" Alex asked Luke.
"Violet, I could use some help over here." Luke said.
"Let's go to the practice room hall to discuss this." I suggested. Alex came up to me and took my hand and I walked him down with Luke following me.
