"I was admiring one of the portraits on the wall, they are quite magnificent," I lied.

"Yes, everyone in my family had a portrait, and they date way back," Bruce said with a smile.

"So you told me you worked at Fairfield University, what do you teach?" I asked.

"I teach science, well Genetics to be specific, but I also sub for biology and chemistry. I really just have a passion for all kinds of science," Bruce said with a smile.

"That's interesting," I said taking a bite of my food.

"What is your favorite subject?"

"I don't really know yet, I guess I like English and a bit of math," I replied.

"That's nice," Bruce said with a smile.

Bruce seemed really nice, but I knew there was something off with him. He knew about the existence of Vampires, and he had one in his basement chained up. I needed to get closer to him. I needed to figure out what the hell he was doing, and I needed to save those vampires.

"Well, it's getting late, thank you very much for having us over," Jason said.

"Yes, it was really nice, thank you," I said with a shy smile.

"Anytime, really, just call, I don't have a lot of friends around here, I recently moved into this house, it was my sister's before she passed away, so I am glad to have met you two," Bruce said with a smile.

"Yes, we don't really have any friends around here either, mainly because I travel all the time, so it was nice to meet you," Jason said as he got up.

Bruce walked us to the door and waved goodbye. Jason pulled out of the driveway and Jason looked at me questioningly.

"You won't believe what I found…" I started, and when I finished we arrived home.

"So you are telling me he knows of vampires and is keeping some in the basement and experimenting on them?"

"That's what it looked like, I need to go over again, I need to get close to figure out what he's doing. If you only saw the man and woman, Jason you would know it was your duty to free them."

"If he is doing what you say, I don't want you near him," Jason said sternly.

"I killed vampires for eleven years, and I got a criminal arrested, I think I can handle a mad scientist," I tried to joke.

"Not funny. He could be mad; I don't want you going near him until I get a background search on him and his family, okay? Promise me Violet," Jason said looking at me intensely.

"Fine, I won't go near him."

With that I went to bed. I really wanted to tell Luke but obviously that was not going to happen. That night I didn’t get any sleep, I kept waking up with nightmares about those vampires. The next day at school was worse, I actually fell asleep in one of my classes, and Trace had to wake me up before the teacher yelled at me. Class ended and I knew Trace was going to ask.

"Why so tired? Was Bruce's house that fun?" Trace joked.

"Trust me, it was not fun, it was scary, and I am so used to telling Luke everything when it comes to this crazy not normal stuff, but I can't," I replied irritated.

"I am right here you know," Trace said

"Right, but I thought you wanted out of all the crazy stuff," I pointed out.

"Just hunting," Trace corrected.

"Well this stuff is crazier than hunting; I've never seen anything like this. Jason told me I couldn’t go anywhere near Bruce until he did a background search on him and his family," I explained.

"Wow, sounds pretty bad. What the hell happened?" Trace said a bit loudly catching Luke's attention.

"Hey, what's going on?" Luke asked intrigued.

"Nothing, Jason just,"

"It was crazy, okay, so Jason was freaking out on Violet for ditching the afternoon with me right, and then Violet completely humiliated him after I left apparently and now they are kind of on odd terms. But seriously it isn’t anything big, just funny," Trace interrupted saving my ass.

"Why would Jason freak on you for ditching? It's not that big of a deal," Luke said.

"Yeah, but with my absences this year, Jason felt like I was pushing it. I don't know, well anyways talk to you later," I said to Luke as I went into the café to put my books away.

"So are you going to tell me about this Bruce character?" Trace asked, surprising me.

"Oh, yeah, um, just a question before I tell you anything, what are your feelings on genetics and all of that?" I asked.

"Uh, never thought about it why?"

"Because Bruce is a scientist who works at Fairfield University, and he teaches genetics, and subs for Biology and Chemistry, so we are working with a mad scientist," I stated.

"What? What do you mean?"

"I found a secret laboratory and it was scary, especially the live specimens, okay. It was freaky beyond belief," I said as I remembered those vampires chained up.

"We will need to talk about this more in depth, but for now grab lunch, then we can speak further on this, because I am not scared off that easily," Trace said with a smirk.

After lunch I told Trace everything, I just couldn’t hold it in, it was too freaky to deal with alone. Trace seemed a little crept out but did a good job at being supportive.

"So Bruce really is a mad scientist? But what if it was his sister who was doing the experiments, and he doesn't know about the secret door? You did say he moved into that house recently," Trace pointed out.

"Yeah, I guess, but still if he has been in the basement he has gotten a small glance into a world that he might not want to even know about," I countered.

"Maybe you should talk to him, or hang out with him more, that way you can decide if he is a mad scientist, or just a scientist who had a sister who was mad," Trace said with a laugh.

"Maybe, but I am waiting for that background search, just to be safe," I said sternly.
