I fought my hardest against Nick, each of us biting and hissing at each other through blows that hit each other. Glancing around I could see that the hunters were dwindling in numbers, but also saw body’s that were unharmed but lying on the grounds. Nick’s army was winning, I could see my vampires on the ground, dead and decapitated as a hunter went around putting them ablaze.

Anger surged through my body, and made me fight harder against Nick. Nick punched me backwards and I fell, dazed, I looked up to see Nick shift into a wolf and he howled, a loud and siren howl. He shifted back and had a wicked smile on his face. Something was about to happen that we were unprepared for, I could feel it in my gut. Suddenly huge creatures with wiry fur crashed through the grounds howling and biting any vampire who came near them. They were werewolves. The tide had changed, the war…it was over, and we were defeated.

The werewolves created a circle around everyone who was still living and closed in on us. Soon every living person was within fifty feet of Nick and myself, looking terrified.

“Listen survivors of this historic battle!” Nick started, “I have won this bloodbath, I am now the new king, unless anyone wants to protest and be ripped apart,” Nick stated waiting for an outburst. “Good! Now as your Rightful King, I give you an option! Either join us, or leave this place and never come back! To the hunters, your leader has been murdered, so I suggest you leave before I have my army change you into your worst nightmares,” Nick said as no one moved but one brave hunter.

Once nothing happened to that hunter, the rest of them followed hesitantly. As soon as they had left the grounds, Nick looked around.

“Vampires! Nobles, Muts, Fangs! Listen! We are all vampires; all need blood to survive, so why are we divided? Join my ranks and myself, and we will strive as a species! If you are opposed to joining I give you twenty-four hours to leave the castle grounds and find a new place to stay! Meeting adjourned,” Nick said as the werewolves backed away, running back to the forest.

I stood up and looked around at the vampires I’d failed and walked inside my old castle to find Violet crying over Vlad’s body with Bruce waiting at the top of the stairs. I took the liberty of speeding upstairs, packing my belongings as well as Bruce’s and Violet’s and carried them back down the stairs. Bruce came down and looked at Violet with sad eyes.

“Violet, its time to leave, the war is over,” I spoke softly.

Violet stood up as Blade and Daniel arrived with a coffin. Blade opened the coffin and Daniel placed Vlad inside. I spotted Ellie and Hypno in the courtyard and saw Jack leaving the grounds.

“I guess it’s just us,” I said as I put my arm around Violet for comfort while trying to hold my bag, Violet’s and Bruce’s.

Bruce took his bag to lighten my load. The five of us, six including Vlad, left the castle grounds and headed down the road to town as the sun was coming up. Blade and Daniel would burn if they were out in the sun too long, good thing I put two umbrellas in the bag I took with me.

Arriving in town, people who were opening their stores stared at us with horror and whispered as we passed through. I had forgotten we were all bloody, and we carried a coffin, which made us look even worse. It started to drizzle as we made our way to the cemetery on the other side of town. Violet wouldn’t speak; she just kept her head down. Arriving at the cemetery, Daniel and Blade put the coffin down and started digging with their hands a hole. It took thirty minutes before they got the hole big enough to bury Vlad. Violet’s eyes were glued to the coffin the entire time they dug. Putting Vlad’s coffin in the hole, everyone gave Violet some space to say her goodbyes to her misguided uncle.

The energy around us was terrible. Everyone was down and felt defeated. Violet came over after a couple minutes and Daniel and Blade started to cover Vlad’s grave up, and I found a stone to put in the ground. Blade took a knife and carved Vlad’s name in the stone before we left.

The rain had washed the bloodstains from our clothes and made us all look more presentable. Getting back into town, Violet dialed Jason’s number so I could speak with him.

“Hello?” Jason said.

“Jason, it’s Andrew. We need a flight back home,” I said somberly.

“Oh…Right away, let me put you on hold for a moment,” Jason said.

Jason realized what had happened, and I felt like it was another person I had disappointed, another person I’d failed. After a couple minutes Jason’s voice was on the phone again.

“Your flight will take off in half an hour, I hope that’s enough time for you guys to get to the airport,” Jason said.

“It’s enough time, thank you Jason,” I said before hanging up.

I informed everyone of the plan, and we walked to the airport. It was a gloomy day with clouds hiding the sun as rain drizzled down with a chilly wind zipping by every couple of minutes. No one spoke a word on the way there, and on the jet it was dead silence also. I think everyone was still processing what had just happened.

I know I still was processing. I remember when I just arrived and was announced King. I felt like a sham being King, but half way through this ear, I felt like I had a better handle on things, and I felt that Daniel, Blade and I had organized the battle well.  And we had. No one expected werewolves to appear and in control of Nick. All I know is that I’m glad the cook stayed, he and I became close over this past year. He was the only one who knew my secret about drinking. Before the battle commenced, we made a pact. If we lost the battle he would stay, and keep me informed on what was going on. He was my only connection to the castle now.

But if I know Nick, he has big plans for our species. He’s going to try to finish what Dracula started. World domination. I place my bets on Nick exposing vampires to humans, and when or if that happens blood will be shed and the war we just got through will seem like a single snowflake in a blinding blizzard.
