I smiled and got ready to go to bed. Gosh, what came over me? How did I get the courage to ask him that? I thought to myself. I went back into my room to find Luke shirtless still wearing his pants. I felt my face go red. He laughed nervously and looked down. I walked into my room and got in bed, and he got in next to me. He put his arm around me and I leaned on him and turned the lights off and we fell asleep. I woke up in the morning and Luke's arm was over my waist holding me close to him. I smiled and then got up trying not to wake him up, but I failed. He opened his eyes and smiled at me, I blushed. I went and did my morning routine and them Luke took the bathroom while I went downstairs to make sure Alex drank his blood before he went off to school. Luke came down and smiled. I almost forgot that Greg was coming over today until I looked at the reminder note on the counter.
Luke saw me glance to it, but it didn’t bother him, I could tell. He still had this smile on his face. The school bus would be here soon. Alex grabbed his bag, waved and headed out the door. Luke and I grabbed our own bags and got in the car and drove to school. I got to school and saw that girl who talked to Trace the other day being harassed by Josh. Trace walked through the door and saw it too. He went straight up to Josh and told him to shut up, and took the girl by her arm gently and pulled her away from Josh. I smiled and was proud of him. I put my bag in my locker and took Luke's hand as we walked down the hall to the café. Trace was in there with the girl and they were talking and I saw Trace really smile for the first time since he was here.
The morning went drama free and by lunch it seemed as if Trace and that girl, I think her name is Zoë, seemed to be friends. Luke joined me at my corner for lunch and everything seemed to be perfect. I looked back at Trace and he was laughing. The café door opened and Ellie walked through. I turned to Trace who froze, but regained his composure.
"Trace, what the hell is going on?" Ellie asked.
"Nothing." Trace replied.
"You haven’t responded to any messages, why?" Ellie asked.
"I don't have anything to say." Trace responded, and turned back to Zoë and started to talk to her again.
Ellie looked enraged and marched right up to him and stood there waiting for him to look at her. Trace sighed and stood up and turned to face her. She slapped him so hard the whole café paused to look. Trace grabbed her arms and pushed her back onto the opposite couch and was on top of her holding her down.
"Don't you dare slap me." He hissed.
"Why not? You deserve it! Are you actually making friends? Do you like it here?" Ellie accused. Trace got up and walked back to Zoë and apologized for his behavior. She half smiled. People started to leave the café knowing the fight was growing.
"Don't ignore me Trace! You know he is pissed at you right? He is growing impatient and so am I! I never see you anymore, what happened?" Ellie asked.
"I quit. I quit Ellie; go tell him that, I'm done! I just want a normal life so I'm done!" Trace yelled at her.
"You will regret this Trace. So will your new girl friend!" Ellie said staring at Zoë with daggers.
"We were never together Ellie…" Trace said a little confused at her remark.
"Forget it! We are better off without you. You just become my next hit so watch your back traitor!" Ellie yelled at Trace.
Ellie was about to leave when she noticed Luke and I. She walked right up to me and tried to hit me, but Luke interfered and grabbed her hand before it hit me.
"If I were you hunter, I would leave, and never come back again. If I hear that you messed with Trace you will become the hunted." Luke threatened.
Ellie's eyes flashed fear regained her countenance. Luke let her hand go and Ellie stared at all of us with daggers in her eyes. She went over to Trace and Zoë.
"Trace, you are making a mistake. Come with me now, let's talk about this rationally." Ellie said. Trace pulled her aside.
"No, I've made my decision. I. Am. Done. Do you hear me? I'm out; I only joined so I could learn to fight, now that I've learned I'm gone." Ellie looked down.
Trace looked at me and Luke for a moment and back at Ellie. Ellie moved away from Trace looking hurt. Trace took a step forward but she turned her back, now facing Zoë. I knew what she was about to do, and so did Trace, I saw it in his eyes. Ellie jumped towards Zoë trying to attack her but Trace knocked her down. Trace was now holding her down while she tried to fight back.
"Trace…what is going on?" Zoë asked shyly.
"Just an old uh…friend, we are in a fight, sorry that you are getting into this." Trace said struggling to keep Ellie on the ground.
"I'm going to go…" Zoë said not waiting for Trace to respond.
Trace looked up and Zoë was gone, and Ellie took this opportunity and flipped him to the ground. Luke and I grabbed Ellie each holding an arm holding her back. Trace got up and looked disgusted at her. Luke took Ellie's other arm and held her tightly.
"Stop! You're hurting me!" Ellie yelped.
"I don't care, if you try to hurt those I care about you will get hurt too." Luke said threateningly.
"Let her go, she isn’t worth it. She is a terrible hunter anyways so just let her go." I said.
Luke looked at me then back at Ellie. He let go of one arm revealing a bruise that started to form. He started to walk out of the café dragging Ellie along with him. He opened the door to outside and threw Ellie out of the school. He came back and looked at both of us.
"What? She wouldn’t give up; she needed to learn a lesson." Luke defended.
"Why…? I mean you don't care about me…" Trace said.
"Look, you announced that you wanted out, so I defended you because you were no longer my enemy." Luke stated.
"Oh, um, thank you then." Trace said unsurely.
"No problem. Ellie shouldn’t be bothering you now."
"Thanks, but what about Vlad?" Trace asked with fear in his eyes.
"Don't fear him Trace, he wants that. If he tries to mess with you, tell me. I will deal with him." I said trying to sound confident.
"Thanks, I'll let you know if anything happens." Trace said then left Luke and I alone in the café.
"What's a day without drama, right?" Luke tried to joke.
"Yeah, I guess so. Anyways I guess we should get to class." I said grabbing my things.
For the rest of the day Trace seemed to smile, but I could see worry behind the façade. Zoë seemed to forgive him, and they were talking again. Luke came up to me at the end of the day and asked how long Greg was staying.
"To tell you the truth, I'm not sure…" I replied, thinking about that.
Luke and I got in the car and drove home to find Alex already there with Emily. They were drawing and playing card games. I smiled at them and walked into the kitchen to find Greg sitting at the kitchen table. I squealed and ran up and hugged him.
