Soulmate

Green.

What did the colour look like? Was it dark? Light? Fluorescent? Strange?

That's what Draco Malfoy always wondered whenever he woke up. Grey tie, grey Common Room, grey eyes on some people, grey food, grey creatures - basically anything that is supposed to be green is grey instead. And he hated it.
When people asked him what colour he couldn't see, he'd lie and say it was blue, or brown, or hazel - any colour other than green. He was the Prince of Slytherin! He couldn't tell people that he couldn't see his colour of his house. That wouldn't do good for his reputation.
But deep down, he wanted to see the colour. He wanted to see green grass that he always walked on and observed from his broom. He wanted to see the green vegetables that he eats. He wanted to see his House colour. He wanted to see the beauty of nature and not some grey splashes here and there. He wanted to see green.

Fifteen years of his life went, and still no green. Still no soulmate. Sixth year came, and he was glad he didn't have to think about his significant other being in harm's way from Voldemort (that and also because he didn't have time to think about his soulmate with the task he got from the Dark Lord).
Seventh year came, and it was hell. The Carrow siblings were recruited to Hogwarts, and harsh punishments were given to students over petty things. That's when being a Slytherin came to be a perk. But people still hated the House, and they especially hated Draco. And he hated it.
He thought it was the end for everyone, and he thought he was going to never see his soulmate -

Until that one fateful day.

***

It was time Defence Against the Dark Arts did Draco find his soulmate.
He was sat at the back away from most of the people, the Carrow siblings at the front grinning evilly. They were to cast the crucio curse on each other, and the Carrows were showing an example.
"Like this, you see?" the female Carrow sneered. She snapped to her brother to grab the unfortunate soul that was to be tortured.
He left the room momentarily only to come back with a struggling girl. The class gasped in horror when they saw the state she was in, Draco eyeing her bored - just about done with life. Her black hair was a mess and greasy, her pale skin covered with cuts and bruises, her green eyes -

Green

Draco gasped when their eyes connected, feeling horror build up inside of him at the sight of his soulmate to be tortured.
"This here is a blood traitor." the female Carrow spat, jabbing her wand at the whimpering girl. "Pureblood, eh? More like a filthy mudblood!"
"Helping the other mudbloods and halfbloods," the brother added in with a sneer, "Purebloods are above them, not with them!"
"Who cares about blood type?" the girl said bravely, but weakly. "We're all human. Well, some. I don't know what you two are, really. Could be demented trolls for all I care." The class chuckled, only to stop when she suddenly fell to her knees in pain, screaming. The siblings smiled sadistically at the sight of her being in pain. Draco got ready to stand up to the evil siblings, only for someone to beat him.
"Stop it!" Neville Longbottom yelled, standing up in protest. His friend Seamus also stood up followed by others. "Stop it!"
"Sit down!" they hissed at him, making the spell stronger in her, her screams getting louder. Draco couldn't stand it anymore.
"STOP IT!" Draco roared, standing up - his chair being kicked back from his abrupt movement. "STOP IT RIGHT NOW!"
Everyone in shock, Draco took that as an advantage and quickly ran to his soulmate, bringing her into his arms. He shielded her from the two with his body, shushing her quietly and attempting to soothe her by whispering sweet nothings to her.
"Malfoy I suggest you step away from that traitor -"
"No!" Draco hissed, moving to stand in front of his soulmate protectively. "I suggest you step away from me and my soulmate!" More gasps ensured from the room. "Step away, or else you will hear from my father -"
"Your father is useless!" the female Carrow cackled. "The Dark Lord doesn't like your family -"
"Then you will hear from Snape instead." Draco snapped back. "And if that doesn't work, then you will hear from me instead." The Deatheaters laughed again at his words.
"You?" they wheezed out. "You're a coward just like your father -"
"CRUCIO!" Draco roared, aimed at the male Carrow. He shrieked in pain, falling to his knees just like Draco's soulmate from before. The sister yelled in anger, glaring at him.
   "CRUC-"
"Expelliarmus!" Neville yelled, disarming her. Neville moved towards Draco, standing beside him and in front of his soulmate. "Malfoy," Neville said lowly, "that's enough." Reluctantly, Draco took the curse off the older man. It was silent.
"No one touches her." Draco finally said, breaking the silence. "No one."
"You will pay for this, Malfoy!" she sneered, helping her brother up. The brother was barely conscious, Draco's cast being one of the rare powerful ones that only few wizards had ever done before - no one has ever seen the crucio spell be that powerful in years and it happened because of Draco's pent up emotions and seeing his soulmate in pain. They were amazed and truly terrified.
But because he stood up to the Carrows despite being a Deatheater himself, Draco gained respect from the school.

News traveled fast around the school, and everyone stared at Draco with respect - and a tiny bit of fear. Even his teachers stared at him like that, though understanding was also on their faces on why he did what he did. It's torturous itself to witness your soulmate being in pain. You'd want to just help them by doing anything - even if that means torturing the opponent or even killing them. Luckily Draco didn't do that.
But Draco didn't care; he needed to look after his soulmate.
Sitting beside her at his House table, he carefully spoon fed his weak soulmate, smiling every time he saw the colour green. "Thank you." she whispered to him. Draco brushed a loose strand of her black hair away from her face, sending her a gentle smile.
"Anytime, love." he told her quietly.
"Your eyes. . ." She moved her hand to his face, gently caressing it. "They are a lovely blue."
"I finally see green." he murmured, following her gesture. A throat being cleared came from behind him, making him turn and see Neville standing behind him awkwardly. Draco sat up straighter in his seat, wrapping a protective arm around his significant other.
"Uh, what you did in class, standing up to the Carrows. . ." Neville scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably. "It was very brave of you."
"You too." Draco nodded back. "Thanks as well, for trying to stop them for torturing my soulmate. It really means a lot. And telling me to stop the curse. I would have killed him if it wasn't for you."
"No problem." Neville smiled genuinely at his enemy. "I guess I'll see ya around, eh?"
"Yeah." Draco smiled. "I'll see you around." Neville turned to leave. "Hey Longbottom?"
   "Yeah?"
"Try not to get on the Carrows bad side, okay? You look like a Walking Dead."
   "Sure." Neville laughed, walking away.
