A/N: AU where light drawings/words would appear on your body from your soulmate.

Soulmate
Everyone around her at school always looked down at their arms or legs, faces etched with intrigue and awe. The reason? Because light drawings and words would appear from them caused by their soulmate. They would then respond back to them by drawing on their arm or wherever.
But for Madeline, that never happened to her. She always waited for her soulmate to write something on her arm or legs - anywhere, really, to no avail. Not one seeing was on her body.
Years went by. High shook came. Graduation came. University came. University went. Still no sign of her soulmate. Did that mean she didn't have one? Did that mean her soulmate died? Was she going to live forever alone?
Joining SHIELD, she was slightly glad she did since it kept her mind off her small soulmate problem. Busy with missions, she didn't have to worry about being threatened since the enemies couldn't use anything against her since she had no soulmate. She was considered one of the best agents because of that. But that all went down the drain when SHIELD fell because of HYDRA.
Watching from afar as the Hellicarriers fell, Madeline started to feel panic grow inside of her. What was going to keep her mind off of her soulmate problem? What was she going to do now that SHIELD was gone?

"Steve, I'm sure I can do this without you." she assured the patriot, walking up the stairs to her apartment.
"I know, but he's quite hard to find -"
"I have Sam helping, remember? Come on, you can trust me. I was one of the best agents in SHIELD. You can still trust me. I never was HYDRA."
"I know." he said quietly. "Just. . .be careful, okay? After I help save Sokovia I'll help you and Sam -"
"Steve, it's fine, really - holy God!" Madeline froze at her doorstep, arm still out to unlock her door. Steve called out to her, worried for her abrupt finish. Madeline paid no mind to him, eyes still in her arm. There was writings on her arm for the first time in her life. Just one word.

Hello?

"Madeline, what's wrong -"
"I'll talk to you later." she cut him off, hanging up on him. She rested against the door in shock, still staring at the word. She felt tears gather in her eyes in relief and shock, amazed that she did in fact have a soulmate after all this time.
Sloppily, she grabbed out a pen from her bag, quickly writing back a response.

Hi

He stood in front of the glass plaque of James Buchanan Barnes, drinking in his information. Satisfied, he went to leave the place before he could get caught only to catch something in his eyes.
People around him had light drawings or words on them, some even writing on their arms. He was confused at the sight. Why were people doing that? And then be remembered his own light drawings and words.
During missions when he was finished early, he would watch as light drawings or words appeared on his flesh arm or legs, curious about them. He never truly knew what they meant, but he found a sense of calm when reading them all. Since he was free from HYDRA, he could learn everything about the world now without any restraints.

From what historians have found, James Buchanan Barnes did not have a soulmate - or didn't get to meet her/him.

That was one of the sentences in the plaque. Did the writings mean he had a soulmate? After all this time, he had a soulmate waiting for him?
Watching everyone writing in their arms, he decided to do the same, grabbing a pen from the gift shop in the Smithsonian.
Sitting in the abandoned warehouse, he debated whether to write something or not. Maybe it wasn't what he thought, and it was a trap? A disease? Suddenly words appeared on his leg.
