A/N: This is an AU where they have soulmates. I got this from another one-shot fanfic book and I like the idea of soulmates so I might do one each for the guys.
Anyway, in this universe they have tattoos on their wrist that matches with their significant other.
Soulmate - Part I
When he was at school, all he ever saw was students staring down at their wrist where their soulmate tattoo sat. They would compare the tattoo with one another, trying to find the significant other. Some succeeded at such a young age, most don't until they reach adulthood. For Sherlock, he didn't find interest in his tattoo. Hearing Mycroft repeatedly tell him that sentiment is a disadvantage, he didn't try to find his soulmate. That, and the fact he was seen as some weirdo at school.
When he started his work as a Consulting Detective, finding his soulmate was the last thing on his mind. It wasn't until his friend John settled down officially with Mary did he think about finding his soulmate. And so did John.
"Have you ever attempted to find your soulmate?" John asked him one day when they finished a small case. Sherlock hummed a no.
"Not really." Sherlock admitted. "When I was little, Mycroft told me sentiment was a disadvantage and that is kind of people don't need a soulmate." John grimaced at his answer, internally cursing Mycroft for basically brainwashing his friend. "So I never really searched for my soulmate. Even now not much people are lucky to find their significant other. You just so happened to be one of the lucky ones."
"We'll do you want to find your soulmate?" John asked his friend. Sherlock glanced at him momentarily from his spot in his armchair, having been in his Mind Palace when they started the conversation.
"Maybe," he shrugged nonchalantly, "I'm sure my time will come soon, Watson."

Walking around London one day from boredom, he couldn't help but look at people's tattoos. Some people were already together, some wandering around to find their significant other. This is hopeless, he thought to himself bitterly. Why am I even searching for mine? Stupid John for making me think this.
Sherlock was snapped from his thoughts by the sound of an angry man yelling out. "Hey! Get back here!" the man was yelling, chasing after a hooded figure. Rolling his eyes, Sherlock crossed paths with the hooded figure, tripping the person. Grabbing the person, he lifted the hood, revealing a woman. Using his surprise, she shook out of his grasp, sending him a smirk.
"Until next time, Mister Holmes." She saluted mockingly at him, revealing her wrist that held her tattoo. Sherlock's breath hitched when he saw the small art. It was just like his.
The infinity symbol.
"Wait!" he called out, running after her. "Wait!" But it was no use. She was gone.

"Huh. How ironic. . ."
"What is?"
"Your soulmate."
"What about her?"
"Well. . .she's a criminal, and you're the one that takes down the criminals." Sherlock stared at John unamused. "Just saying. . .fate can be funny."
"She only stole food from the man's shop." Sherlock waved off, focussing back to his evidence wall on his soulmate. "That's not killing."
"Defending her already. . ."
"Shut up, John."
"Okay, okay!" He raised his hands up in surrender. "So, got anything?"
"Mycroft gave me the security footage of where I met her. She blended in with the crowd so I lost sight of her afterwards. How am I supposed to find her? I couldn't even get a good look at her face."
"Easy! You don't."
"What?" Sherlock stared at him confused. "What do you mean?"
"I mean. . .you don't find her." John shrugged. "Let her find you."
"I'm. . .not following."
"Look, she knew who you were, yes? All you have to do is post something on your blog about her being your soulmate and boom. You have her." Sherlock still gave him a blank look. "Here," John sighed, holding his hand out, "let me see your tattoo."
***
"No wonder she hasn't gone to you yet." John remarked, typing at his laptop. "You're always hiding your tattoo. It became something interesting for the press momentarily."
"When we started getting noticed I decided to hide the tattoo." Sherlock shrugged, plucking at his violin absently. "No use being lied to by many people claiming they're my 'soulmate'."
"True. . .hold on, I got something."
"You do?" Sherlock immediately jumped his way over to John's armchair where the man himself sat. "Show me!"
"Well, I posted the photo of your tattoo on my blog, and I asked the people if anyone knew who had the same tattoo." John explained. "I got a comment that looks true enough. Here," John handed him the laptop.
221b_fan_101: Yes! Oh my God! I know who has the same tattoo! She's a dear friend to me, very close! I can't believe my friend is the significant other to Sherlock Holmes!
"Ask that person for their details," Sherlock ordered, handing the laptop back to him, "I got some questions that needs answering."
***
"Are you definite that your friend has the same tattoo?"
"Yes! I even do photography for a living - she happened to be one of my models and I got a shot of her tattoo." The lady grabbed her phone, going to the photos. "See?"
The men leaned down to her phone, observing the photo. It was a simple photo of a young woman. She had shiny black hair that went to her waist, eyes emerald green and staring out at the window she was leaning on, her skin pale reflecting off the moonlight. Her left arm was leaning against the window edge, showing her tattoo.
"The infinity symbol." Sherlock murmured, thumb brushing over his own symbol. "That's it."
"How can we contact her?" John asked the lady.
"Uh, she's at a homeless shack at the moment, giving her stolen goods to the poor." The lady shook her head with a tsk. "I tried to tell her to stop stealing, but she wouldn't listen. She doesn't have the money to buy much food for the homeless so she steals." Sherlock sent a smug look to John, proving that she wasn't a criminal. His friend merely rolled his eyes before focusing on the lady. "I can call her if you want?"
"By all means." Sherlock waved his hand, motioning her to do so.
"You ready for this?" John asked him quietly. "You ready to meet your soulmate after all these years."
Sherlock took an intake of breath, glancing over his shoulder from the window to see the lady talking on the phone eagerly, trying to convince his soulmate. "Ready as I'll ever be." Sherlock answered eventually. "The game is on!"
