I can hear helicopters in the background of a phone call.
"How much longer, D?"
He sighs.
"Just another month, Love."
You said that last month.
"Please be safe Darren."
He sighs.
"No promises."
I'm silent as he chuckles.
"That's not funny."
He stops.
"I'm sorry. Ill be back. I promise."
I sigh.
Tears spring my eyes, spilling down my face.
"Charlotte are you ok?"
I take a shaky breath.
"I don't want to plant a tree, D!"
I wipe away tears on my sleeves.
My hand reaches behind me to grab D's pillow.
I put it to my stomach, curling in on myself.
"What?"
I sob into the pillow.
"I don't want to plant a tree."
He sighs.
"Charlotte I don't know what you're talking abo-"
The sudden break off of our call startles me.
I panic for a moment.
Then I remember the military only allows certain time on the phone.
I throw my hand over my mouth.
I can't plant a tree.

My eyes are tired as I trudge along the streets.
I've tried so hard to put on a smile everyday.
Today I just can't.
People stare at me.
They know me.
They knew me.
_____________
I stare hatefully at Daveed's tree.
I hate trees.
The doors to the theater next to ours flies open.
Addie throws herself into the street.
I hurriedly dash into my own theater.
The door slams closed behind me, causing the cast on the stage to jump.
"Sorry."
I mumble and walk onto the stage.
The orchestra man plays notes on the piano.
We stand in a line and warm up as he plays the tune.
Lin steps out of the line for a moment.
"Let's just take a moment to pray for D."
I tense up.
Ok not really a praying person.
