"Hey..."
I grunt.
"Charlotte...wake up. We're home."
I shoot up from my sitting, or laying, position in the airplane seat.
The doors creak open.
I grab my bag and dash to the front of the plane.
Darren follows closely behind.
The air outside the metal death trap is clean and uncluttered.
I dash through the airport, Darren stumbling behind me like a dog.
At the gates, Addie, Oak, Lin and a few more of my friends are waiting for us.
I crash into Addie.
She stumbles back a bit and wraps her arms around my neck.
Everyone is silent.
I would be too.
No one knows what to say.
No one knows what to do.
A song comes to my mind.
"I've learned to slam on the brake, before I even turn the key. Before I make a mistake. Before I lead with the worst of me."
I sigh.
"Give them no reason to stare. No slipping up if you slip away. So I've got nothing to share? So I've got nothing to say? Step out, step out of the sun if you keep getting burned. Step out, step out of the sun, because you've learned because you've learned..."
Lin started to speak, but I was lost in my own thoughts and musical numbers.
"On the outside always looking in will I ever be more than I've always been? Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass. I'm waving Through a Window. Oh I try to speak but nobody can hear so I wait around for an answer to appear well I'm watch, watch, watching people pass. I'm waving through a window. Oh."
Addie let go of me, tearing my thoughts from Dear Evan Hansen.
I blink, regaining awareness.
"What happened, Charlotte?"
I jerk my head to the side.
Lin cocks his head.
I frown.
Then I scowl.
I don't like to yell, but this might be an exception.
I take a deep breath, and ignore my thoughts of rage in the middle of the airport.
A thought rushes through my head.
I check my phone.
It's dead.
"Addie!"
She flinches.
"What time is it?!"
She hesitates.
"3:38."
"I mean...crap...what day is it?! Like number?!"
She clicks the power button on her phone.
"May 26th."
I mentally slap myself.
"Shit!"
I turn from person to person, mumbling about who knows what.
I snap my head to Oak.
"I need you to drive me somewhere."
He is taken back.
"What?"
I take my bag from Darren and take Oak's arm.
Addie and Darren run after us.
The others stay behind, stunned.
We run through the parking lot.
Oak unlocks his car and jumps inside.
"What are we doing, Charlotte?"
I slip into the passenger seat and slam the door.
"I have callbacks in ten minutes!"
Her face pales and she slaps Oak in the arm.
"Drive ya idiot!"
Darren laughs.
"I think he's the most normal of us all."
I stare at the road ahead.
"Is anybody waving back at me?"
