Darren is silent as we drive to the airport.

"Good thing I could grab an extra ticket real fast." I say, letting my normal accent flow.

Kaydance fidgeted in the back seat of our rental car.

"I can't believe I'm actually going to New York."

She giggles and throws her hands up.

"And with two rising Broadway stars!"

I laugh.

My face is excited and happy, but my mind is confused and wandering.

Damn, I'm a good actress.

Darren sits next to me, fiddling with his watch.

I look away, pretending I don't notice his awkward movements.

______________

Kaydance steps dramatically out of the taxi we took to my apartment building.

She spins around to get a full view.

I sigh and stand up next to her.

"Take a deep breath, Kaydance. This is what dreams smell like."

She closes her eyes and takes a deep, staged and practiced breath.

"Dreams smell like barf and grease."

I roll my eyes and move to the trunk to get her bag.

She looks around at the tall buildings and millions of people.

Darren opens the trunk.

We both reach for her bag at the same exact moment.

He pulls his hand away quickly.

I pick up the small backpack and throw it over my shoulder.

Kaydances's relatively short hair had grown out tremendously over the years.

It's been so long.

Too long.

We settle back into our apartment, Kaydance making due in Katie's room.

She smiles at the pictures.

I stand behind her and stare at the photo.

It's a picture I took on Angels Polaroid at a skating rink.

Mitch is laying, sprawled out on the skating floor in the back, Angel is covering her face with a peace sign, Katie is posing dramatically, and I'm standing awkwardly as people stare at us taking the photo.

She giggles.

"I bet they're a load of fun."

I nod.

"Yea. Yea, they are."

Darren slips into bed early.

I crouch down to his side.

"Everything alright down here?"

He nods, not opening his eyes.

I stand up.

I'm about to turn around when I notice something gleam out of the corner of my eye.

I have always had an eye for shiny things.

I spin on my heels to notice my pocket knife sticking out from under his pillow.

"Darren!"

He opens one eye, aware he's been caught.

"How did you get that?!"

He shrugs.

"Darren Daniel Bara you better tell me how you got into my safe to get that knife, without my noticing."

He shrugs again.

"Are you going to ignore me?"

He shrugs.

I growl and take the knife away, putting it in my safe, and making sure to change the passcode.

He doesn't flinch as I crawl into bed.

I groan again and turn off the light.

"Welcome to New York."

I mumble.
