A clattering from the kitchen caused me to jump.
I jerk my head to the side.
Darren is gone.
I stare at the door that leads to the rest of the apartment.
The clatter is followed by complete quiet.
Realization hits me like a hammer.
I leap out of bed and dash into the kitchen.
Kaydance jumps when my door slams into the wall.
A pan full of pancake batter rests on the stove.
Darren is sitting on the couch, watching Bull.
He turns his head, curiously.
Kaydance glances at me, cautiously.
"Are you alright, Charlotte?"
I shake my head and run a hand through my tangled hair.
"Yeah."
They both continue what they were doing.
"Sorry if the clatter woke you, dear. I dropped a cup."
I nod and take a seat at the bar.
Eventually, she pushes a plate of pancakes in front of me.
"Thanks."
She calls for Darren to sit with me.
We are silent as we eat our breakfast.
Eventually, something breaks the silence.
My phone rings loudly, causing everyone in the room to jump.
I stumble out of my chair and pick it up.
I don't pay attention to who it is until I hear a familiar voice.
"Mrs. Bara?"
I clear my throat.
"This is she."
The friendly female voice chuckles.
"I have been sent to inform you that we have an opening for a television show, and my producer would like to see if you wanted to audition."
My jaw dangled ajar.
"W-What show?"
I stuttered, fumbling with the strings on my sweater.
The lady fiddled with some papers for a moment.
Kaydance cleared her throat, causing me to be aware of her presence.
"You have been invited to audition for a new show called, 'Our Time to Shine.'"
I smiled like a dork.
I opened my mouth to speak, when I realized that I couldn't just fly to LA while I've got so much to do at home.
"Thank you for the offer. I will call you back when I find an open time."
I could hear the smile in her voice as she spoke.
"Wonderful. Have a nice day, Charlotte."
I will.
