Chapter Twenty Six
Justin's P.O.V.
Garrett showed me all around the camp for all the racers. It was blocked off from the visitors so they wouldn't get ambushed by fans. I guess this was pretty popular out here in California. Now we were headed towards the racers booth.
Apparently sixteen guys raced in this event, including Bradley and Noah. The races started tomorrow which meant the fan day was today. Garrett didn't seem like the same guy that threatened me. I was still tempted to ask him what the heck that was but I could see why Lexie liked him so much.
He was telling me she was going to be busy today until midnight. Poor thing she was going to be exhausted by tonight. I guess these events worked her like crazy but she never once complained about it. I noticed on the way down she was getting agitated with Noah texting her so much.
I honestly think he had a thing for her, what guy wouldn't? She was the best thing that would happen to any guy. Maybe Garrett knew that too and he was trying to get rid of me seeing I was a threat to that possibility.
As we were walking to Bradley's booth I decided to get this out of the way. "So what's this about asking Lexie to be your girlfriend?"
He sighed keeping his eyes ahead, "Yeah I'm really sorry about that, I was just trying to protect her. She just seemed to fall for you instantly so I was wanting to make sure. I didn't mean to threaten you but I can't see her go through another Jacob situation again"
I nodded as an acknowledgement to his apology, "That guy really did a number on her didn't he?"
"Yeah he did, first guy she ever dates and he chews her up and spits her back out. I was just making sure she wouldn't have to go through that again. All those nights she thought we weren't listening but we knew she cried herself to sleep. The months of depression when sometimes she wouldn't get out of bed for anything. She completely shut down, wouldn't tell us anything, wouldn't let us in. Then she started on the suicide attempts. She never actually told us why she did that but I have a feeling it had a lot to do with her parents. Her dad kept calling her weak that she was letting a boy do this to her but Kara and I both knew there was something more to it than Jacob"
He sighed and I heard his voice cracking, wow he really did care about her. "Her mom was on her side thinking it was because of Jacob but after the third attempt we figured there was something more serious going on. I remember sitting in that hospital room watching her slowly breathe in and out as she slept. Dang I'm getting choked up just thinking about it" he shook his head before continuing. "Kara and I both made a promise to protect Lexie from dealing with this ever again. My best friend was depressed, the one girl I thought would never let anyone ruin her happiness. To this day I don't know why she tried to commit suicide"
"Wow, I didn't know any of that" I said and at that moment I realized he was doing what anyone would do in this situation.
"You didn't?"
"No, she only told me about the suicide attempts. Not the depression or her parents, she doesn't talk much about her personal life and feelings"
"Oh I don't like the sound of that, I thought she stopped telling me and Kara those things since she was telling you" his voice was obviously panic stricken as I shook my head. I didn't like the sound of this either. Was she hiding something? "It's never good when she closes up like that, she may have a smile on her face but that means nothing"
I was obviously worried for my love, none of this sounded hopeful. "I'll see if I can figure it out" he nodded with a look of relief, "So how did you two meet?"
