I was going to do a reasonable rant.
But then I realized what today was!
So in honor of this special occasion, I am going to do another rant on the world of Sonic Fanfiction.
Now I don't know how it is with other fandoms because I never bothered to look at their ships, but I assume that it's probably similar to Sonic the hedgehog's ship wars.
Except these arguments are backed up by ten and twelve year olds who's favorite past time is writing yaoi or smut and cannot give plausible argument for their ship.
I did briefly cover this back in "My Unhealthy Obsession", but I decided to go into more detail because I have a feeling no one went back and looked up SonAmy vs SonAdow.
Okay.
I may start screaming.I do not support ships that aren't proven by Canon resources–or I try not to, anyways. The book I'm in mid-writing is probably the only exception because when you're trying to get your book out there to the Sonic fans, it HAS to revolve around a ship.
Which is stupid, might I add. There's actually quite a few fanfics that have ORIGINAL concepts with AMAZING fan characters with SUPER TALENTED writing, but because there's no ship involved, there's no way it can get out there.
Also, if there's a ship, it automatically has to have a fluff fest.WHY.
But this is besides the point. Mini lesson for today: start reading and voting on stories that aren't a big hit yet. Especially if the writer has done a really good job of making it.
ANYWHO.
If you've ever witnessed a ship war, then you are one of the lucky few who managed to get out alive. There's so much cussing and insulting and not enough debatable content.
It's horrid.
And now someone's going to call me out because if I "do not support" these ships, then how in the absolute world do I know what one looks like?
And the answer lies years ago, when I was a cocky Jack ace 12 year old, who sadly supported some of these ships with everything I had.
It was a nightmare.
*shudders*.
All right! Enough of memory lane.
I'm not here to tell you not to ship SonAmy or ShadAmy or even SonAdow. You are entitled to your own opinion.
What I'm saying goes out to ALL shippers in general.
When you argue why your ship is the greatest of all time, make sure to avoid these AT ALL COST:•extreme profanity
This doesn't help prove your point, it just makes you appear uneducated. If you can't find a better substitute for a cuss word, get up, go out, and buy you a dictionary. (Or look up stuff on Google, since we have that sort of power now.)
•Spelling errors/mistypes
If you walk into an argument and start using "u" for you, "your" for you are, or "there" for they're, then you're walking into an argument you cannot win. This not only makes you look like you skipped 5th grade, it's a dead giveaway that you're probably not prepared for a serious debate. You will storm out of that ship war head down in shame.
•Threats
Do I need to explain WHY you shouldn't do this? If I'm playing around with friends, a "threat" is more of a joke. If I'm protecting one of my friends, a "threat" is a promise.
If I'm arguing about a ship online, a "threat" is a one way ticket to Hell. Seriously. Think before you type.
•Insults
Insulting another person whilst arguing distracts you from the main purpose of the debate. You're not supposed to be there to bring down another person, you're supposed to be showing them why you think your ship is better or real or whatever.
That's also called being a jerk.•Pity Party
Saying that you're going through depression or anxiety or that you're suicidal whilst debating is a DEFINITE nono. If you are any of these things and you can't handle an online argument, then get the frick out. Don't continue that fricking chat. Just leave.
You aren't helping your point by bringing it up, you're just making yourself look ridiculous. It won't help you win a real argument.
And if someone comes on here and says that I'm the one being ridiculous, welp, great. Fantastic. I'm just telling you straight up from personal experience. What you should do in a Ship War:
*research
The more you know about your ship, the better prepared you are in a real debate. Have AT LEAST three plausible examples at to why your ship could be considered Canon. (But if you're doing this in Sonic Ships, remember that there are over three different companies that support three different ships. Archie Comics support SonAlly, so don't go there to back up a SonAmy ship. Sonic X supports SonAmy, so don't go there expecting enough evidence to back up ShadAmy. And Sega.....just confuses me.)
*Be polite
If the other person starts winning the debate, don't be a sore loser.
If the other person makes a good point, don't cuss them out.
If the other person starts treating you with disrespect, take it on calmly. What you say CAN AND WILL hurt you later on.
If the other person loses, don't gloat. Seriously. Don't be a douche Canoot.•Keep an open mind
You can learn from the person you're debating with more than you might think. And if you let yourself take their comments without retaliating, you might start realizing a few things about your own ship that you didn't see before.
But I doubt anyone deep in the Sonic Ship War will listen to me because their ship is OH SO PERFECT.
Yeah. Not. Take it from a veteran fan. Your ship isn't as great as it seems.
And to everyone else, take this as a clear warning to STAY AWAY FROM SHIP WARS. ESPECIALLY SONIC SHIP WARS.
And if you do find yourself in one....if you wanna get out alive....run for your life!
(If someone guesses which song that's from, I will love you forever. And no, it's not a Sonic Song.)
Welp, that about sums it up.
