This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race

First person to guess the band who wrote the song title above gets a free pizza!

Haha, kidding, sorry dudes. I can't shove pizza through a phone, sadly. Otherwise my friend would have a pile of pizza and cake by now.

But you should try to guess, anyways.

Okay, dorks, geeks, etc.

We all have a favorite kind of music (even if you're like me and have several), right?

All right, cool.

It's not all the same kind of music, right? Maybe one person likes a bit of country, and the next prefers alternative?

Wait a minute— that's called an OPINION, isn't it?? Who allowed THIS into Wattpad???

But seriously. The rant here is on music in stories– not on the fact that we don't get much of a say in Wattpad.

I'm not talking about lyric books. I'm talking about that moment in the story the MC is dancing around the house with head phones on and singing their heads off, when suddenly Canon walks in and watches them.

Recognize this scene anywhere?

It doesn't really bother me that much– besides the fact the Canon stalks Fan. I'd probably sneak up behind whoever was singing and scare the crap out of 'em, but that's just me.

Another thing that's a tad overused– the greatest understatement next to my obsession— is the skill level of singing the Fan has. They're always described to have a really good voice and tend to be shy about it and think otherwise.
That is, until Canon pops up with his/her smile and kisses them and says," I love your voice, you should sing more often!"

Bleh. I'm supposed to eat cake today and this isn't helping my appetite at all.

Not everyone has a good voice. That's okay. There's other things you can be good at. But I wish in stories, the Fan wouldn't have the voice of an angel.

And let's not forget this wonderful thing called TIME. Because if not used often (like every shy singing Fan), the singing gets rusty.
Take it from me, dudes. You go one year without singing, and suddenly you can't sing a note without cringing.

It sucks.
But that's life.

And while we're talking about music here....people often take a song and forget to listen to the lyrics. Like they'll put it in a book for you to listen to while reading and it doesn't match up with the mood of the story or what's going on.

Or they'll base a oneshot or something off of a song, and while I don't mind this whatsoever (I've actually written a few of these), I wish some writers would take the time to understand the song they're putting down BEFORE putting it down.

I haven't met anyone since creating this profile who's done it, but on my other one, I saw ten, maybe more.

Lemme just give you an example.

"The A Team" by Ed Sheera

You've probably listened to it, especially if you live where I live. It's not a sweet song.

It's about a slut who sleeps around to pay for her Angel Meth.
She dies in the end.

Good song?
No.
Absolutely not.
But people normally don't pay attention to lyrics.

Another one that's a LOT more obvious:

"Tag, You're It" by Melanie Martinez

My friend was the one who got me into this music, but she never listened to the lyrics. So she literally thought it was a couple playing tag.
It's actually a song about kidnapping, for any of you who've never listened to it.

Just

LISTEN to the lyrics of any song before you decide it's good for a one shot.
I'm looking at you, Sonic fanfictioners.

And now it's Quick Question time: What's your favorite music?

Not just genres. Bands, singers, DJs. Whatever you're into.
