*MAJOR DISCLAIMER*
I am not saying all fans or stories do this, I'm just saying the ones I saw from this fandom did these repeatedly. If you are a fan of what I'm about to rant on, I sincerely apologize if I've offended you in anyway. We're here at Day 5, probably the spookiest day of our Spooky Week. And holy hell have I gotten more views and such in the past week than I have the past month. It was like Wattpad saw me update and screamed," GUYS GUYS SHE'S BACK, PUT HER IN SOME RECOMMENDED, LETS GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!!!!"
Because we're now at 5k and even though I should seriously finish that dedication, I have a bad feeling that it'll only be partially finished. But that's something we can worry about later!
For now just...enjoy this..um...rant.Hands down, no doubt about it, Sonic the Hedgehog probably has the worst fandom out there. But I've realized for a while now that there's another one that could come very close....
The oh so magical world of My Little Pony.
This is basically Sonic but with ponies and Pegasi and unicorns. It's terrifying. The fans act just like Sonic fans, from their stories, to their art, and even the way they talk. This is by far the scariest rant I've done this week.
The characters– both Canon and Fan– are made to act Mary/Gary Sue/Stuish at levels only achieved by Sonic OCs.
The Canons are made out of character quite often, for starters. Writers always seem to focus on their more apparent traits– that is, the very traits they are most famous for. Applejack being honesty and western, Rainbow Dash being loyalty and a total tomboy– et cetera.
But some never really go past that. There's not anything that gives them an immediate flaw, and that's really discrediting the characters.
Unless they're seen as the villains. And then they're made like total trash.
Also, they appear really, really attractive in the eyes of the reader. I mean...they're PONIES. If you're all up for beasteality, then fine by me. You do you or do animals or whatnot, just keep it to yourself in some secret place of guilty pleasure.
Not on a book on a website with literally hundreds of thousands of people who could look over it and flag you a million times over.
Along with these two things, none of the characters can handle stress. At all. If they end up in a relationship they don't want to be in, they cry in front of everybody and make a big scene. If they're wanting to be in a relationship with another pony, but that pony rejects them, then they resort to suicide.
I've stated time and time again, you should NOT use this as a flipping pity device!!! This isn't right!
But whatever. Until I get an actual full blown Brony or Pegasister creeping around my rant book, there's not much I can really say.Another trend that I noticed that felt oddly similar to the Sonic Fandom was the actual fans and their behaviors. For starters, not a single person commenting on the books that I read could spell. Not a one. And there were some tenth graders in there (as they so explicitly stated), so it's obviously not just younger kiddos popping in there defending their turf. If we can really call it that.
They're also seriously clingy when it comes to characters. I've always hated coming across any Sonic fanfiction and some idiot popping up in there screaming "SHADOW-KUN IS MINE!!!!!!"
Or
"I AM SONIC DONT YOU DARE DISS ON ME AND MY AWESOMENESS I WILL COME AND FIND YOU AND BDKHSUSGSJGSKG"And unfortunately, I saw the same situation with this MLP fandom. People were in the comments, screaming at the author if they made one mistake about the characters or clearly announcing their romantic interest in one of the ponies. Along with that, they cannot take an opinion. I saw several instances where someone said "To be honest, I don't like this character because....."
And everyone blew up in their face.Yo. Take a chill pill. It is a fictional character. We're not all going to agree on things like this.
And at some point, I even found a Pity War.
This means people were throwing out how crappy their lives were in the comments and the one who has the crappier life gets more people rooting for them and wins the war.
I've seen things like this in arguments, where someone will try starting one by saying," I'm suicidal and depressed so you should stop arguing with me bc I might kill myself".
Because that's totally logical. The last thing I want to point out–because I know if I go any further, I'll end up insulting somebody– is how messed up some plots can be. I see this in a lot of fanfictions, but it was very prominent in both Sonic and MLP.
See, a story could start out great with an amazing start, the greatest idea in the history of writing to go with it, and best of all the characters are even in character.
But then the writer's ideas either dry up or are influenced by what the readers want and....well....it doesn't turn out pretty.A lot of the time it'll be making the entire book just a romantic piece of fluff or something, instead of going with the original idea. In the beginning, some all powerful malicious pony could be trying to take over Canterlot and instead of focusing on that major threat and what to do about it, the plot circles around how to make the relationship within the story more dramatic.
Like two ponies could bang and then one would immediately say that they didn't like the second pony in the first place and then run off to go find the second pony's best friend so they can bang them, too. And then poor second pony will throw herself off a roof, but will inevitably fail and instead make the first pony realize how much they actually loved pony number two.Had you been writing a romance book and had actually spread that out through the entire story instead of dumping it in the first two chapters, I probably would've thought it decent.
But that didn't happen. But anyways! What do I know, right? I'm just some messed up teenager on Wattpad who probably is actually a very bored forty year old man sitting at an old computer desk for all you guys know.
Now THAT is a terrifying thing to think about.
And hey, this fandom is still better than being a lonely ten year old kid falling head over heels for an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog. So vote!
Comment!
And I shall see YOU in the next rant!
