Moana's P.O.V

My Gramma Tala would tell me stories of my grandfather and how he fought on the Vietnam War. I would be so amazed and she would tell me:

"Moana, when you find a man, find a man who will fight for you" and I would listen. She always has funny stories or cool ones. But today I'm heading to the hospital. She doesn't have a lot of time. Me, my mother, and my father are in the car driving silently. As we find parking I sigh. My dad and mother hold hands as I keep mine in my pockets.

"Hello. How can I help you?" The receptionist asks.

"We're here to see my mother." May dad says.

"Alright I just need a name." He says.

"Waialiki, Tala Waialiki." My mom says. He nods and types into his computer.

"Ah yes, she's in room 109." He says. We walk down the hall until we reach 109. I open the door and I see Gramma on her bed staring out the window. I knock on the frame of the door. She looks at me with a smile.

I rush over to her bed.

"Hey Gramma." I say.

"Moana...my dear you look older." She says.

"Well I just passed my SAT's." I say. She nods. She removes her necklace.

"Gramma what are?" I say. She hands to to me.

"This is for you to remember me by." She says. I turn and see my father talking to a nurse. I look back at my Gramma and she smiles as she closes her eyes. Suddenly I hear a loud long beep. I feel my blood grow cold.

"Gramma? GRAMMA!" I shout. The nurses run in and my parents pull me out of the room. We wait and then a nurse comes out.

"I'm sorry." She says. I cry and my parents take me home. We have the funeral on Saturday. I can't stop crying during the sermon. As people give their condolences I can't handle it any more. I push past the people and run through the doors.

I run out of the church. I run as fast as I can.

"Oof!" I say as I fall to the ground. I just collided with someone.

"Hey are you ok?" I hear. I look up. Its a guy.

"I-I'm ok! I'm sorry!" I say. He smiles and holds out a hand. I give him my hand and he pulls me up without effort.

"I'm sorry! I didn't get your name." He says.

"Moana Waialiki." I say.

"Maui Demoni." He says. He smiles and then frowns.

"You ok?" He asks. I shake my head and feel more tears pour down my face.

"Let me guess. You came from that funeral?" He asks nodding at the church sign. I look and nod.

"My Gramma just died." I say.

"I'm so sorry."  He says. A sob escapes from me.

"There there! Its ok. Listen, your Gramma is in a good place now. Nothing and nobody can harm her." He says.

I smile and wipe my tears.

"I'm sorry that I bumped into you. I'm training so I can pass my physical exam so I can get into the army." He says. Then my Gramma's word ring through my head.

"Find someone who will fight for you." I whisper. "What was that?" He asks.

"Oh! Nothing! Um I know I might sound weird but, could I see you again?" I ask.

"Sure! Do you have your phone on you?" He says.

I grab my phone and hand it to him. He types something in.

"Give me a call." He says. I nod.

"Well, I'm sorry for your loss but just remember that she's in a better place." He says. I nod. He smiles and I smile. He jogs off and I walk back to the church. My parents are the first to see me. I explian that I met Maui and he helped me cope a little bit.

Two Weeks Later...

I'm at the mall walking around. Then I hear my name.

"Moana!". I turn around and smile.

"Hey! Maui right?" I say. He smiles and nods.

"Glad you remember." Maui says with a wink. I smile.

"What you doing here?" I ask.

"Well I'm here to walk around." He says.

"Cool! Well I need to buy some new tennis shoes." I say.

"Cool. Mind if I hang?" Maui asks.

"Not at all. Besides its nice to have a friend." I say. He holds out his arm.

"Shall we go?" He asks. I smile and accept his offer.

"We shall go." I say.

We walk to Payless and I grab a pair of sneakers.

"These will do." I say. I grab a pair in my sizes and walk up to the register.

"That'll be $29.99" The cashier says. I look in my purse and groan.

"I forgot my wallet." I say. Then a card slaps down on the counter. I look and see Maui with his wallet.

"I'll pay!" He says. The cashier swipes the card and places the shoes in a bag.

"Have a good day!" He says.

He hands me the bag and we walk out.

"Why did you do that?!" I ask.

"Because I wanted too." He says.

"I need to repay you!" I say. Maui smiles.

"Not a problem at all." He says.

"Please!" I say.

"Alright, how about a date?" He asks.

"A date?" I repeat.

"That or I could just do my good deed for the day." He says.

"Alright!" I say. He smiles and nods. We walk to the food court and eat.

We walk out of the parking lot and I smile.

"Thanks for the shoes." I say.

"Thanks for the date." He says. I smile and he smiles back at me.

"Maybe we could go on a second one?" I ask shyly.

"Sure." He say. I smile and place a kiss on his cheek.

"Thanks and call when you want that second date!" I say as I walk to my car. He smiles.
