Chapter 18 - Smoke

(POV Maddie)

Kami lang ni Jared ang nasa bahay namin. Nasa Vienna pa din ang Uncle Syl and Aunt Lena. Cole is also staying with us gamit ang guest room pero madalas siyang wala.

"Maddie, asan si Cole? Akala ko ba siya maghahatid sayo palagi sa school?" tanong ni Jared habang nagbrebreakfast kami.

Since kaming dalawa lang madalas sa bahay, ako na mismo ang nag preprepare ng breakfast para sa aming magkapatid.

"Bakit mo hinahanap? Maaga umalis si Cole, may inutos ata ang lolo."

"Sino maghahatid sayo?"

"Jared, kailan ka pa naging concern kung may kasabay ako pumasok o wala?"

"Sumabay ka sa akin. Susunduin ko lang si Maia," he said without emotions.

Alam ko may tinatago si Jared na bumabagabag sa kanya. May tiwala siya na kaya ko protektahan ang sarili ko, pero kung nag-aalala na siya para sa akin, siguradong may problema.

"May problema ba Jared? You look worried, my dear brother."

"Maddie, have you ever felt that someone is observing you from afar? Parang may nakatingin sayo pero walang tao? Parang may kasama ka pero ikaw lang mag isa?"

"Stop it, Jared. You're scaring me. Dahil ba sa nalalapit na ang Halloween kaya ganyan na ang trip mo?"

"I'm serious," sabi ni Jared na derecho nakatingin sa mga mata ko. There's no hint na nagbibiro siya.

"Wala naman ako nararamdaman. How about you?"

"Unfortunately yes. Sa school madalas, pero never dito sa bahay. I'm probably thinking too much. Alam mo na siguro na hindi ko na kontrolado ang ibang demons. Even the two demon generals have their own set of minions. That's the only explanation that I can think of."

"It is probably the minions of Alastair or Abraxas. Be careful Jared. Some demons may consider you as their demon king, but your power as a Lakan is still weak. You have no match with the two demon generals."

"Ows? Ako weak?"

"Ikakasal na si Cole, may fiancee na siya."

"Oh really? You must be devastated?" natatawang tanong niya at halatang natutuwa pa siya.

"Ako devastated? Do I look heartbroken to you?"

"Just do what I say. Kung saan ka pupunta, make sure na palagi mo kasama si Cole specially sa labas ng bahay. Kung pwede lang matulog ka sa tabi niya, gawin mo. I am giving you the go signal."

"Jared, kapag ganyan ka kaseryoso magsalita, wala akong choice but to say yes."

Hindi na nakasagot si Jared dahil nag ring ang phone niya. It was Maia who is calling him. It seems like an urgent phone call dahil nagmamadali si Jared Mason. Mabilis akong nagligpit ng gamit at sinundo sa bahay nila si Maia.

"Anong sabi ni Maia? Bakit ka nagmamadali?" tanong ko nang nasa kotse na kami. I noticed na mabilis magpatakbo si Jared at feeling ko, anytime babangga kami sa bilis.

"Dala mo ba si Toothless?"

"Palagi ko dala ang white diamond necklace ni mommy. Jared, answer me! May problema ba?"

"Maia called me, she's panicking. I don't understand her, but it seems that she was attacked by a supernatural being."

Pagdating namin sa bahay ni Maia, nasa kwarto siya at nakaupo sa kama habang nakayakap sa mga binti niya. Nang malaman ni Maia na demon king si Jared, alam ko na natatakot siya pero hindi niya pinapakita. But this time, hindi na niya maitago na natatakot siya. She's literally shaking.

"What happened?" tanong ni Jared at mabilis niyang niyakap si Maia. My brother really cares for this girl.

"I think I am dying. I think ako na ang susunod na mamamatay."

"What the fuck are you saying, Maia?"

"Last night, I saw a someone na nakatayo sa harap ng kama ko. I don't know kung sino dahil nang binuksan ko ang ilaw, wala naman tao. But I can feel that someone is there. Someone is looking at me."

"Maia, it is just a dream," Jared said as he cupped her face. I can see na umiiyak si Maia sa takot.

"I thought it was just a dream too kaya natulog na lang ako. Pagka gising ko, wala naman ako naramdaman na kakaiba kaya nag ready lang ako for school. But then in broad daylight, I saw a black smoke, similar sa nakita ko kagabi. The smoke swirls suddenly around me at tinatawag ang pangalan ko. Bigla lang nagliwanag at nawala ang black smoke. Jared, I am not lying! I am not dreaming! Alam ko ang nakita at narinig ko! You have to believe me!"

"Sssshh. I believe you," mahinang sabi ni Jared habang hinahaplos ang buhok ni Maia. My brother just looked at me as if he wants me to check if Maia is telling the truth.

I summoned Toothless, the silvery white dragon from my white diamond necklace. Mabilis na lumabas si Toothless at umikot sa buong kwarto ni Maia. But the white dragon does not feel any presence at nahiga lang sa may carpet.

"Jared, let us try if we can absorb some visions from Maia."

"That's a good idea. Maia, I want you to listen carefully. Alam ko mahirap para sayo ito, but I want you to focus on the being that you saw earlier. Can you do that for me?"

Tumango lang si Maia at hinawakan namin ang kanyang dalawang kamay. For minutes, we stayed that way, but I can't absorb any visions from her.

"Did you see it?" tanong ni Jared.

"See what? Wala ako nakita Jared. Ikaw, did you see the black smoke?"

"Yes, a swirling black smoke surrounding her as if may sariling buhay. It dissipates after a few seconds. She's indeed telling the truth."

"Maia, why don't you stay with me and Jared for a few days. I can talk to your grandfather. Jared can compel him to agree. Let's observe if the black smoke can follow you sa bahay namin."

Tumango lang si Maia sa suggestion ko na mukhang tuliro pa rin sa mga nangyayari.
