Chapter 21 - Enenra

(POV Jared)

Maia looked shocked. Hindi ko siya masisisi dahil hindi normal ang nasaksihan nila ni Maddie kanina. Buti na lang at hindi sila sinaktan ng black smoke.

"Tahimik ka ata?" sabi ko sa kanya sabay tanggal ng Panda head hoodie niya.

"Bakit andito si lolo mo? May supernatural powers din ba siya?"

"He is one of the board members of our university. But he is here primarily because of the supernatural deaths involving those three students."

"Jared, do you think that black smoke has something to do with these deaths? It called my name again. I don't know kung narinig ni Maddie."

"Let us take each day at a time. Don't worry, I will protect you," I said as I cupped her face. She looks scared pero tinatago niya lang.

"Makakarating sa lolo ko na may tatlong estudyante na naman ang namatay. Six last year and six this year. I opened this to Maddie awhile ago, baka mag transfer ako ng school."

"Saan school?"

"Sa ibang bansa, possibly sa UK. Mawawalan ka na ng utusan at driver kapag lumipat ako ng school," nakangiting sabi ni Maia.

"Why do I feel na ikaw ang nalulungkot? Are you going to missed me that much?"

"Hoy, hindi kita mamimissed noh! Pasalamat pa nga ko dahil makakalaya ako sa pagiging utusan mo. I am finally free from the demon king."

"Bakit parang naiiyak ka?"

"No? I'm... not..."

"Come here," I said as I pulled her close to me and hugged her.

Ever since na malaman ni Maia ang sikreto ko, I felt responsible for her. Noong una, gusto ko siya pahirapan, pero napalapit na din siya sa akin.

"Hindi nga ko umiiyak, bakit mo ba ko niyayakap?"

"Maia, it is pretty understandable kung mamimissed mo ko. You don't need to deny it. Sa gandang lalaki ko, hindi malayong mainlove ka sa akin."

"Tsk! Conceited! Taas tingin mo sa sarili mo noh?"

"Napaka sweet ko, caring, intelligent and most of all, good looking. Di ka pa ba naiinlove sa akin?" tanong ko sa kanya sabay lapit na mukha ko sa mukha niya.

Our lips are almost touching and Maia just closed her eyes as if she's waiting for me to kiss her. But instead of kissing her lips, I just kissed her forehead and hugged her tight na parang isa siyang panda bear stuffed toy.

Umuwi kaming dalawa ni Maia sa bahay at sumunod naman agad si Cole, Maddie at ang Lolo Rusty. Tulog na si Maia sa guestroom pero kaming apat ay nasa living room na parang nagpupulong.

"Lolo, kung ano man ang tinatago niyo Cole sa amin ni Jared, please sabihin niyo na. Alam ko na may connection sa amin ang mga recent deaths sa school," sabi ni Maddie.

"Julia, I told you to leave this issue. Nag-usap na tayo about dito?"

"Cole, malaki na kami ni Jared. Six dead bodies last year and another six this year. Yung issue about sa mga rogue demons, it just started this year kaya sigurado ko, there is something going on. Do we have a supernatural serial killer?" tanong ni Maddie.

"I don't know Julia, I really don't know," Cole said in defeat.

"Uncle Syl and Uncle Joaquin are busy defeating demons in Europe. Their hands are already full. Please let us help. Jared and I can help you, but please tell us what is really happening."

Tahimik lang nakatingin sa amin si Lolo Rusty. He looks old, but not too old para mapag kamalan na lolo namin. He is not our biological grandfather, but our parents treated him like a family. Even my father adapted his last name.

"Just like what Cole said, we really don't have any idea what we are dealing with. Kilala niyo ko, mga apo. I am a historian and I study the world of the occult, but this is the first time that we have encountered this creature or whatever it is. I am afraid we don't know know where to start," mahinang sabi ni Lolo Rusty.

"Lolo, you can start with all of the deaths surrounding us ever since we turned twelve," sagot ko kay lolo.

Hindi ko inaasahan na mamumutla si Cole sa sinabi ko. Even lolo looks surprised. Based from their reaction, they know that these deaths are related to us and they have no plans of divulging these information any sooner.

"Anong ibig mong sabihin Jared?" natatakang tanong ni Maddie sa akin. I just looked at Lolo Rusty and he just nodded as if giving me the permission to finally discuss this topic.

"Maddie, naaalala mo ba yung classmate natin nung elementary na nalunod sa pool? After a year, may classmate na naman tayo na nagkaroon ng heart disease, na comatose at namatay. Hindi mo lang siguro napapansin dahil lumilipat tayo ng iba't ibang school but every year, palaging may taong namamatay na connected sa atin."

"Is it true Cole? Connected ba sa amin ni Jared ang mga nangyayari kaya ayaw mong sabihin sa akin?"

"I guess it is no use to hide everything from my grandson who has an eidetic memory just like his father. Jared is right. Bawat taon, palaging may namamatay na tao na related sa inyo. Classmates, teacher, neighbor and all of their cause of death is related sa heart failure. It baffled me for years," paliwanag ni Lolo Rusty.

"Lolo, these mysterious deaths started to happen when our parents passed away, is that right?" tanong ni Maddie.

"Yes, it seems that even if your parents were just mere mortals, with no powers, they keep this killer at bay. Cole, show them everything we have about this creature," utos ni Lolo Rusty.

Cole opened his laptop and showed us several videos. Yung iba malabo at luma. Yung iba parang galing sa traffic cameras. Amos must have hacked these videos.

"There is a Japanese formless mythological creature called Enenra which is made of smoke and shadow. But I don't think we are dealing with Enenra. Maddie is right, I think we are dealing with a supernatural serial killer in a form of a black smoke," sabi ni Lolo Rusty habang pinapakita ang mga short videos.

In the first video, a black smoke suddenly went inside the ladies room. After a few seconds, the students started to scream. This is the video of the most recent killings.

Yung next na videos, may mga ilang tao na sinusundan ng black smoke. I know these people. These are the same people who mysteriously died due to a heart related anomaly.

"Any idea kung bakit pumapatay ang black smoke? Bakit siya related sa amin ni Jared?" tanong ni Maddie.

"I have no idea, mga apo. One thing is for sure, this creature is killing random people na related sa inyong magkapatid. The time and the place were all random. The only thing that is constant is the way it killed its victims. Lahat related sa puso."

"Lolo, this killer smoke is not related with me and Maddie. It is only connected to me," sabi ko while watching the video files from Cole's laptop.

"What do you mean, apo?"

"This video wherein a man is being followed by the black smoke. This is my gym instructor back in high school. Maddie never met him before," sabi ko as I showed the video to Maddie.

"I don't know him lolo. I never seen him before. Jared is right, all these dead people are related to him alone. The students in the ladies room are his classmates, but not mine," sagot ni Maddie and her face clearly shows that she is afraid.

"Whatever this thing is, it wants my attention," I said with confirmation.

Matagal ko na nararamdaman na related sa akin ang mga recent unusual deaths, I was just in denial phase.

"Sa ngayon, it is not hurting any of our family members or close friends, but I am worried dahil nagpakita ang black smoke sa amin kanina ni Maia. Jared, she may be in danger because of us, because of you," nag-aalalang sabi ni Maddie.

"I will do my best to protect that girl even if it will cost my life."
