Chapter 58 - Worlds Apart

(POV Maddie)

It seems that Jared is hiding something from us. I am certain that he has several theories, but he is afraid to reveal it without any proofs. And yet maybe, he is afraid to accept that his theories are correct. Even Cole is uneasy. He knows that our enemy is way out of our league.

Maia prepared us some clubhouse sandwiches. Siya na din ang nag volunteer na magluto ng dinner. She wants to help sa abot ng makakaya niya, lalo na sa kapatid ko. They seemed to form an unusual bond with each other.

Kahit nasa gitna kami ng psychological war, I can hear that Jared is flirting with Maia from time to time, but I know my brother well. He is too stressed and Maia is her only source of strength. He became so fond her after years of treating her as his pet.

Let me give you some motivation...

The four of us were startled when we received another message from Nameless. After a few minutes, we received some files from Amos confirming deaths in Portugal, China and Argentina.

"Do you think we should tell your Uncle Syl and Uncle Quinn what is happening here?" tanong ni Cole habang binabasa ang mga print outs. Cole and I decided to stay in the living room. I asked Maia and Jared to rest so my brother can fully focus tomorrow.

"No, Cole. We should handle this. Their plates are full and besides, they can't help us with Nameless kung kami ni Jared ang gusto niya kalaro."

"Maddie, sinabi ko kay Jared ang tungkol sa pangalan na Cassus. He seemed to know more kung saan nag originate yun, but he is keeping something from us."

"I know, that's why I want him to rest. Ilang araw na siyang hindi nakakatulog ng maayos. He needs a fresh start bukas. He is the only one who can solve this at di niya magagawa yun kung pagod ang utak niya. I am not smart compare to him."

"Are you kidding me? You are the smartest girl I know, Maddie," sabi ni Cole habang naka smile sa akin.

"Smart ba ko? Smart ba ang magmahal ng lalaking nakatakda ng ikasal sa iba?"

Cole completely changed his expressions at hindi niya ko sinagot. He is not happy or sad, no emotions at all as if his eyes are filled with emptiness. He is just looking at me with those pretty brown eyes. Without warning, hinawakan ni Cole ang magkabilang pisngi ko.

"Maddie..."

Maddie? He always call me Julia or Maddison.

Somehow, it feels good to hear him calling me Maddie. Siguro naaawa siya sa akin ngayon dahil hindi niya kayang suklian ang pagmamahal ko sa kanya. Kapatid lang talaga ang turing niya sa akin.

"That's fine, Cole. Don't pity me. I will try to get over you. I won't ruin your wedding, hindi ako ganun. You should focus on yourself. Be happy with your life together with your soon to be wife. Pero sa ngayon, I want you to lend me your strength to help me and my brother."

"I will help you. You are someone who does not need my protection, but I will still protect you even if it will cost my life."

Nararamdaman ko na he means every word. He will give up his life for me, pero he will do the same thing for Jared, for my dad and for my grandfather. We are his family.

I tried to study the patterns of the deaths, but I can't find any common factor aside sa suicide. Hindi ko na namalayan na nakatulog na ko sa sofa gamit ang binti Cole as my pillow. Medyo madilim pa sa labas at bahagya pa lang ang liwanag ng araw.
