4. Meeting Parents (S.M)

"They'll approve of you! Don't worry," I assure Shawn.

"What if they don't?"

I give him a small hug for comfort and say, "my parents will approve. There is no 'if' about it."

"I'm still worried," he tells me.

"It's okay, Shawny. Just try not to worry. This dinner won't be such a big deal," I say.

He nods slightly, showing that he's not fully convinced and I give him a quick kiss on the lips.

The sound of footsteps get louder as they come closer and my parents arrive behind me.

"Ah, Y/N you didn't tell us that Shawn was at the door already," my mom says.

I shrug and my dad says, "come in, come in."

Shawn gives them a warm smile and enters, following their directions to the dining room. We all settle into the table and I see Shawn has sweaty palms.

"So, Shawn I hear you're a singer," my dad says.

"Yes, I recently received a record deal from Island Records."

"Hm, how fancy. Do you believe you'll be able to support a family even if you're singing career doesn't work out?"

I nearly spit out my water.

"Dad! We're only 19, the both of us! There are no plans to begin any family yet!"

"He's just asking, dear," my mom says, defending my dad.

"I — Y/N and I use protection," Shawn mutters.

"Shawn! Don't tell my parents that!"

My dad looks over at me with wide eyes and I cover my mouth with my hand.

"Y/N is in college and she's studying while you're off trying to get fame," my dad tells him. "Sounds rather foolish to me."

"It's not foolish! Shawn has talent," I say.

"I believe that I can make it as a singer," Shawn adds.

"Believing isn't good enough. I need actual proof that you'll be able to support my daughter."

"Once I'm touring around the world and winning awards, you'll have your proof then," Shawn snaps.

Everyone stays silent at Shawn's sudden outburst until my dad begins laughing.

"What's so funny?" I ask.

"Shawn here is a keeper. Have I been able to tell you how many boyfriends of yours have taken all my questions and remarks without saying anything back? This one here — this one is a keeper."

"Wha-"

"I approve," my dad says.

"As do I," my mom agrees.

I stick my hand out to Shawn and our hands gently intertwine, giving me a feeling that I can't describe.

"See, Shawn. I told you they would approve."
