Mentions of abuse, based on the song 'Treat You Better.'

The moment he hits me again, I know I have to get out of there. There's no chance of calming him down when he's like that so I go to the only person I know that will comfort me.

  Shawn.

When I frantically knock on his door, after running to his place, he quickly opens up and groggily rubs his eyes, saying, "what are you doing here at this time?"

I don't say anything and I opt to simply show him my arm. Bruises are littered on my arm and he covers his mouth in shock.

"I'll get you some ice," Shawn says, "come inside."

He lets me go inside and he quietly shuts the door behind me, a big difference from the way my boyfriend had slammed the door in his rampage of anger. Shawn hands me a pack of ice and lets me rest on his sofa.

I relax when I lay down, comforted by Shawn's familiar scent and he stares at me.

"Who did that to you?"

"You know who," I simply respond.

He huffs and asks, "how long has that been going on for?"

"I'd rather not say," I admit.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I couldn't," I say as tears begin falling down my face.

"You should have told me," he tells me.

"I know."

"Why haven't you broken up with him?" He asks.

"He's been having issues and I felt like I had to be there for him so he could solve them."

"He solves his issues by hitting you? That's no excuse. You should have broken up with him the first time he did that or at the very least, you should have told me."

"I couldn't," I tell him.

  "Why?"

"He said he loved me so I didn't want to hurt him."

"He's hurt you in far worse ways. If he actually loved you, he wouldn't abuse you that way," he says.

  "But—"

"He would treat you better. After all, any girl like you deserves a gentleman."

"He has different ways of expressing his love," I try to argue but I know that even I don't believe that.

  "He doesn't love you."

  "I know," I weakly say.

"You need to break up with him."

"How? He's going to hurt me," I tell him.

"I'll be there with you when you break up with him. If he wants to hurt you, he'll have to go through me first."

"Thank you," I say. "I should have told you sooner."

"You should have. I could have helped sooner."

"You're always there for me," I say, "all these years, you've been the one that's been like my boyfriend, not just a best friend."

When he meets my eye, the realization sinks in and instantly, everything makes sense. The butterflies I feel with him and the way I act around him.

He runs his hand through his hair and tells me, "I never told you how I felt because you had a boyfriend."

"You should have," I say, "I've always had feelings for you but I've barely realized it."

"I love you."

"I love you too," I admit.

As the silence floats around us, I look up and gaze into the softness of his brown eyes. He holds my hand and returns my gaze, staying like that until he cups my chin. My eyes slowly and gently shut as I wait for his lips to meet mine. When our lips finally meet, a warm feeling fills me and I know that he also feels the sparks that fly between us.

"You have no idea how long I've been wanting to do that for," he says, giving me a cute grin.

"The wait may have been long but it sure was worth it, wasn't it?"

"It definitely was worth it," he agrees, "I think I love you even more now, after that kiss."

"The feeling is mutual," I tell him, laughing.

He smiles and leans in again, giving me a small kiss on my cheek.

"I know I haven't even taken you out on a date yet but will you be my girlfriend?" He asks.

"Hmm, let me think that through," I respond, laughing a little.

"Hopefully this will help you decide," he says and he turns to me, giving me a sweet kiss on the lips.

"I've decided," I tell him and after a dramatic moment of silence, I yell, "yes!"

He embraces me into a hug and says, "I love you so much."

Before I can return the 'I love you,' I hear my phone ring and find that the caller is my ex-boyfriend. Though I've already broken up with him, I haven't actually let him know that I'm done dating him.

I show my phone to Shawn and he says, "like I said before, I'll be by your side. Don't worry."

"Let's do this," I tell him, taking a deep breath.

And I answer the phone, successfully breaking up with him while Shawn stays by my side, giving me encouraging kisses and compliments.

I've let go of my past and now I'm ready to start my future, with Shawn.

  Hope you enjoyed!
