Lonna was fully distracted by her thoughts as she dragged her feet across the concrete sidewalk. Seeing Keun-suk, my memory starts to run wild. So much of our past appears in my head. During those times, he was still a college student. He came to our house to Dad's assistant and my tutor. When I messed up, he would help. Protecting me, helping me. One such time came to her mind.
Lonna sat on the couch crying so hard she was hyperventilating as she stared at the old record player in front of her. Keun-suk rush to her side, full of worry for the young girl. "Lonna, what is it? Why are you crying?"
"What am I going to do? Dad's record player broke after I touched it."
Keun-suk put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Don't worry. I'll take a look ok?" Lonna watched him anxiously as he rolled up his sleeves and inspected the player. A sudden wide smile came to his lips. "No big deal, it's just the needle. We can replace it."
Lonna hoped he was right. "Really?"
"Yes. Your dad will be home late today, so before he gets home, we'll go get it fixed, ok?" He asked. Lonna finally calmed down enough to smile and nod in agreement.
Later, at the record store, the repair man used his magnifying glass to get a closer look at the record player. Lonna's brows knitted in concern as he stayed stone silent. Keun-suk leaned over trying to look as well. Lonna tried to control her anxiety by doing calming breaths.
For what felt like a lifetime to Lonna, the man finally placed his screw driver back down. "Alright, it's fixed." He played the record that was already on the turn table, to prove it. Lonna turned to Keun-suk and gave him a grateful smile, which he returned with a wide one of his own. "Dance, young people, do not waste this beautiful music." The repair man said.
Putting his bookbag down on the countertop, Keun-suk turned and extended his hand towards Lonna as he bowed to her. Lonna could feel her heart beat loudly to the rhythm of the music. "But, I don't know how to dance." She was embarrassed to admit as she slipped her hand into his.
Keun-suk chuckled as he wrapped his hand around hers gently. "Don't worry, just follow my steps." Lonna watched his every move as he pulled her closer to him, taking her other hand in his, and gently wrapping his arm around her waist. Her eyes kept contact with his beautiful brown ones as he gently started to move them in a circle.
"Do colleges have many dance parties?" She asked out of curiosity.
"Yes. As long as you work hard and get into college, I can promise, you will be the most beautiful dancer at the parties." Lonna laughed as a slight blush colored her cheeks.
Just like that time, Keun-suk's patience and caring, taught me many, many curiosity and hope for the world. Lonna stopped her walking and looked at her surroundings. What's wrong with me? Since I was thinking about Keun-suk, without realizing it, I came back to Dad's house.
"Who is he?" Suga's question chased the memory filled fog as Lonna finally noticed him.
She jumped when she realized who it was. "Suga."
Suga started walking up to her. "At school, who were you talking to on the stairway?"
Lonna felt nervous. "You saw us?"
"Who is he?" Suga's voice was low and his tone made Lonna worried.
"He's someone..." Suga stopped as he got right in front of her. "I know from the past." He bit the side of his lip and shook his head. "Did my talking to another man, make you jealous?" Lonna thought teasing him would cut through the tension between them.
"No!" Suga was quick to reject her accusation, and Lonna couldn't help but feel down at the answer.
Then why did you ask? You're such an uncaring man. Lonna didn't dare voice her silent thoughts.
"Did you get lost?" Suga asked. "I've been following you since school, and I was thinking, is my noona not paying attention, or is she not used to coming back to our house?" Lonna glanced over at her old home. Suga rolled his eyes before taking her hand in his and pulling her along. "Let's go. I'll take you home."
Lonna let him lead her a bit before she spoke. "He is someone I liked before."
Suga rubbed his tongue on the inside of his cheek as he stopped walking. "Really? Then you two meeting again, must be great."
Lonna moved quickly to stand in front of him, she pulled on the sleeve of his jacket hard as she spoke. "But the person I like now is you. Really."
Suga couldn't help but smile at her reaction. "I know. You don't have to pull me so hard."
Lonna quickly released the tight grip she had on his sleeve and turned to face away from him. "You do that on purpose."
"Huh?" Suga asked confused. "Do what?" Lonna tried suppress her laughter as Suga wrapped his arm around her shoulders and started walking again.
Just like that, even though we are beginning a new life, I still get tricked by my favorite devil. Lonna reached over and intertwined her hand with Suga's free one beside her.
Suga played with her fingers gently. "Why are my hands so cold today?"
Lonna gasped as she quickly rummaged through her purse to find what she wanted. "Since our hands are so cold..." She pulled the couple glove Suga had made for her out of her bag. She held it in front of him with the biggest smile on her face.
Suga smiled sweetly as they put it on their hands and laced their fingers together. They slowly took their time going home.
"Can we be like this?" Lonna asked, concerned with being seen.
"If I don't hold your hand, then what if you get lost again?" Suga answered. They both continued to walk down the road with no care to if anyone saw them for just this time.
Author's POV
Suga's grandmother lowered the volume of her TV as Butler Chen brought the important letter to her. As she read the contents, the night she saw Suga and Lonna interact on the broadcast swam through her head. She had questioned if she had done the right thing, but that memory was enough to tell her she had.
She slowly opened the photo folder in front of her. The girl held her glasses behind her back as she smiled sweetly.
