‘So, I misunderstood him today.’Lonna thought as she sat back in the tub, which she had been soaking in for awhile now.
‘I even called him the worst type of person on earth.’ The fantasy she had of him playing only for her played through her thoughts. ‘Ever since the concert, my heart has been beating so fast.’ The temperature of the water was starting to make her sweat.
‘I have never felt this way before. It feels like…not being able to breathe.’She was pulled out of her thoughts, as the telephone rung from it’s place in the living room.
Lonna used as much of her strength as she could, to get out of the tub and wrap a towel around her to make it to the ringing phone.
She used the wall to steady herself as she walked. ‘My heart is racing; I must have soaked too long.’ She felt weak and dizzy as she walked slowly to the phone.
Her eyes kept trying to roll back in her head as she stumbled through the living room. ‘I am thinking too much.’ Was her last thought as her legs finally gave out making her collapse to the floor. Everything went black.
Lonna’s eyes slowly fluttered open giving her a blurry image of someone looking down at her. Her eyes started to focus as she looked around the familiar face.
Feeling scared she shot up from her laying position on the strange couch. “I must be dreaming…I need more sleep.” Lonna said as she laid back down making the man beside her wave his hands trying to stop her from falling back to sleep.
Lonna’s eyes burst open as she realized the man wasn’t a dream, but all too real. “NaNa! Good! You’re finally awake!” Mr. Min was smiling excitedly at her.
“What happened?” Lonna screamed as she scrambled to sit back up.
“NaNa, I am so happy! I always dreamed of having a daughter as cute as you.” Lonna watched as that creepy look took form on Mr. Min’s face once again, as he talked joyfully.
“From now on, starting this day, treat this as your own home. Ok?” Lonna was confused by what he was saying. “In a house this big, you even have your own room too.”
‘Seeing the president smile like he’s extremely happy, I am starting to recover my memory…’ Lonna thought as she watched the man in front of her ramble on about something she was paying no attention to.
‘The answering machine picked up the call as Lonna laid groaning, too weak to get up off the floor. “Daughter, dear, why haven’t you answered the phone all evening? Your aunt passed, so I have left to help and won’t be back for two or three days. But, don’t worry, I have asked my fiancé to care for you. He has the house key, so he can come and get you. That’s all, bye.”
Lonna could hear her mom’s message as she held her self from passing out fully. “Mom…Mom…” She called out for her using the last bit of strength, which made the battle with staying awake too hard, as she finally gave in.
‘She wants me to stay here? I think not!” Lonna screamed at her mother in her thoughts. As she looked down she noticed something off.
“WHERE’S MY TOWEL?!” She screamed making her mother’s fiancé scream with her. “WHAT DID YOU DO TO ME?!?” Lonna crossed her arms around her feeling violated as she saw the track suit she was now wearing.
“Don’t worry.” Mr. Min said grabbing Lonna’s shoulders trying to calm her. “I asked the maid to change your clothes. Your mom dropped these off.”
“Uncle, thanks for your good intentions, but I gotta go!” Lonna said feeling scared once more and ignoring him trying to stop her as she escaped in the first direction she thought of, she didn’t move far, as she stopped.
She turned slowly to the man who looked just as freaked out as she felt. “Um…where is the door?”
Mr. Min’s eyes looked away from her before he started sobbing uncontrollably.
Lonna couldn’t believe the grown man was crying. ‘What’s he doing? Is he really crying actual tears? Why is he crying?’
“NaNa…you can’t accept me? You don’t approve of your mom marrying me? So, you won’t allow me to care for you?” Lonna had been through this guilt trip before, but that didn’t keep it from making her feel bad.
“No, that’s not it. It’s just…forget it. Whatever you want.” She said before sighing in defeat. Mr. Min could once more not control his excitement as he ran up to Lonna making her jump in surprise.
“That’s great! NaNa is good. I am going to show you something really cute.” Lonna shook in disgust and fear at his creepy smile.
Later
“Ta-da” Mr. Min said as he pointed the new picture out to Lonna. “Look at this one. Yoongi at age three was so cute.”
Lonna smiled at the pride she saw on his face. “One candle on the cake, we said ‘Happy Birthday’ and had him blow! ‘Psh, psh, psh.’” Mr. Min made a cute face as he mimicked the Suga at that time, trying hard but failing at blowing the candle out.
“He cried because he couldn’t do it.” Lonna giggled at the cute image his memory formed in her mind.
‘But he really was cute…’ Lonna thought as she looked at the next page of pictures. Her eyes landed on a picture of who she guessed was Suga, but he wasn’t alone in it, as an older woman had him in her embrace.
“What a beautiful woman.” Lonna said aloud catching Mr. Min’s attention. The smile instantly wiped from his face as he looked at the picture Lonna was talking about. “Is that Yoongi’s mom?”
“Uh…” Mr. Min looked like someone had slapped the air out of his lungs. “Yes, weird, I thought I put this picture away.” Lonna hated the look of misery she saw.
“I’m sorry.”
Mr. Min looked at Lonna seeing her feeling sad as well. “Don’t be sorry. When Yoongi’s mother ran away from home, he had just started elementary school.”
Lonna looked at the photo and couldn’t help feeling sorry for Suga. “The reason for the failed marriage…was because I was more focused on my career, and left all the responsibilities of the house on her alone. At the time when Yoongi needed her the most, he lost her.”
As Lonna listened to Mr. Min’s heartbreaking story, the words she last said to Suga rang in her mind.
“How can you bully a kid? Did your mother not teach you how to act?” “Now you understand, I was so bad, that is why she left me behind.” She felt bad all over again for how she had treated him.
“Allowing the family to fall apart…is the greatest failure in my life.” Lonna could see the regret on Mr. Min’s face.
‘So, because he blamed himself, that led to Suga being so spoiled.’ Lonna made the connection.
“Yoongi can’t deny that you love him.” Lonna said trying to brighten his mood once more. “That time at school, I saw him with you, it was the first time I saw him change from violent and mean, to gentle.” Mr. Min grabbed her into a tight hug once more.
“NaNa, you really are like an angel!” He said as he crushed the girl against him. “Even your words have the power of love.”
“Uncle, please, calm down.” Lonna was thankful he listened to her and let go.
“I believe if it’s you, you’ll be able to change the scary Yoongi.” He quickly grabbed her hands in his, surprising her. “Please! From now on, look after Yoongi.”
“I…” Lonna started to object.
“I know, he is very lonely inside.” Lonna once again tried to get a word in but was stopped.
“You have to be hungry! Uncle will cook, ok?” Mr. Min said quickly changing the subject. Lonna watched him leave.
‘Even though I don’t know what the future holds, I think I can understand why mom likes uncle.’ Lonna thought to herself as she watched the man move around the kitchen.
