“Good morning, you got up early this morning,” Dan glared at me. I looked around to see that we were still on our way to camp in the car.
I was about to say, “Well, I went to sleep early,” but the sound wouldn’t come out. I tried again, but I couldn’t talk. ‘Holy Hera,’ I mouthed.
Dan rolled his eyes. “At least you can’t interrupt us any more then you already have,” he smiled and kissed Chloe awake. He was acting like a complete jerk, the only reason of why I didn’t slap him was because I knew what was going to happen when we got to camp.
‘It is like you are trying to make me jealous,’ I tried to say. I had forgotten to write a poem yesterday, so now I couldn’t speak for the rest of the day. ‘How could I do this for eight years? I can’t even do it for an hour.’
“Good morning Sunshine!” Chloe cheered as she woke up in the driver’s seat. We were on the side of the road, probably resting for a while. Chloe started the car up right after another make out session with Dan. I wanted so badly to warn Dan about Chloe’s real intention, but I couldn’t speak. “I know a few shortcuts so if we don’t stop anywhere, then we can be there in the morning,” she informed us as she put her foot on the gas pedal.
I rolled my eyes, tired of her constant flirting and bragging.
“What is it?” she challenged me.
I rolled my eyes; she didn’t need to know that I couldn’t speak.
“I guess that you finally learned your place,” she flipped her hair. I rolled my eyes and took out my Mythology book. I read the short story about Clytie, she was so desperate. No wonder she was so mean. I stared out the window, trying not to get carsick. Finally, I fell asleep, like I usually do in the back of a car on a long trip.
“Oh child, what did they do to you?” a soothing voice echoed. I was in a cave that had plants growing on all of the walls. It was a beautiful cave and oddly comforting.
“What do you mean?” I directly thought, my voice echoed through the room like the other one did. I didn’t even open my mouth to make it happen.
“You can’t speak, and you are afraid of your own powers,” the voice sounded concerned, like a mother.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“I am your one and only mother,” she sounded slightly offended that I didn’t know right away. I never had a mother or even heard my own mother, so I didn’t feel bad that I offended her.
“Demeter?” I asked hopefully. Demeter had claimed me and I had control over plants and all.
“No child, Demeter is not your mom,” my mom informed me. I stared forward, not knowing what to think.
“But Demeter claimed me. She has to be my mother,” I explained.
“You just assumed that it was Demeter. No one has ever been claimed like that because no one has ever been my child and deserved to be claimed,” she pointed out. “Artemis knew that you were my daughter, so she tried to warn you that no one else should know. Your powers are normal for my children.”
“There are more?” I wondered. Maybe I wouldn’t go through this alone.
“That is for you to find out. I know that it would not be fair for me to just make you join my side, but I know that eventually you will. I am your mother and I know what is best for our family.”
I shook my head, not knowing what she meant by that. She might know what is best of the family, but that probably isn’t what is best for me. “You never told me who you were.”
“My dear, sweet child. You don’t need to know yet.”
