The Talk

We walked into the forest and I was about to conceal us in a hedge, but remembered that I would never use any favors from my mom ever again.  I pointed up the tree, “We will not be heard from up there.”

“Ok,” he said as he took the lead, climbing the tree more swiftly then I ever could hope to.

I followed from behind, “What are you doing?”

I looked down to see Alex.  I hopped down from the tree and faced him.  He looked hurt like I just dumped him.

“Who is that?” Dylan yelled.

It clicked in place.  “Dylan!  Come down here!” I yelled to him.

“Who is that?” Alex asked, hurt.

“Don’t worry, it is only my brother,” I whispered.

“A Demeter boy?” he asked, still hurt.

“No,” I said.  When Dylan reached the ground, I told him, “This is one of the very few people that are allowed to know.” I gestured to his arm, “Go ahead and show him.”

Dylan wasn’t sure how to respond, but pulled up his sleeve to so Alex could see the markings of Gaea.  I pulled up mine to remind him of what it was.

Alex took a deep breath, “Okay, sorry for interrupting.”

“It is okay, I would probably be worse if I was in your position,” I joked.  He smiled; I was glad that I could make him happy even though he was really sorry.

“Okay, back up the tree,” I rushed Dylan.

“But I already climbed it like two times!” Dylan complained.

“Just do it,” I rolled my eyes.  We settled on a thick branch that could support a tree house if there was one.  “Okay, now I am guessing that you know who our mom is.”

“Yep, Gaea,” he answered uneasily.  I don’t blame him; I had stopped him from saying her name for the past few times.  I probably seem like I would attack him if he said her name out loud.

“Good, so who knows about that?” I asked uneasily.

“Rain,” he shrugged.

“Wow, she decided to become a finder,” I sighed silently.  “That is nice to know that she didn’t stay in the forest for another week and got lost of something,” I said to myself.

“What is a finder?”

“Someone who goes out of camp to save a demigod,” I explained.  “Gaea is known to be a very evil goddess and she is our mom.  The whole camp is at war with her.  If anyone knew who our mom was, we would both be a piece of crap.  Everyone would treat us as if we were mass murderers.”

“I still don’t get why they would if we didn’t do anything,” Dylan seemed a little lost.

“Just don’t tell anyone, no matter what.  If you are asked who your parent is, you must tell them that your parent is Demeter.”

“What about my friends?” Dylan wondered.

“No, no one.  If you expose yourself, you expose me,” I explained.  “If I am exposed, so are you.  We are a team and no one can know why.”

“But, why could that one guy know?”

“Because he is my boyfriend,” I shrugged.

“What about my girlfriend?  Can I tell her?”

“You have a girlfriend?” I questioned.

“Not yet.  If you can get a boyfriend, I am sure that I can get a girlfriend,” Dylan stated.

“I don’t think that you could ever get a girlfriend because you never say that you are better than someone who is trying to save your butt,” I argued.

“Whatever.  I got it.  I cannot tell anyone who my real mom is,” Dylan plainly stated.

I quietly clapped my hands, “Good, so now tell me.  Can we be 100% honest with each other no matter what?”

“Sure.  So, how did you get your voice back?”

“Um…” I stuttered.  “Why must you know?”

“Because we are going to be 100% honest with each other,” Dylan reminded me.

“Well, Apollo gave me my voice,” I told him.  “Let’s just go to camp now.”
